After reading the reviews, I went ahead and rented this on itunes. It starts off good to the point of the revenge kill and leaving the car behind, after that, the movie just becomes tedious. There is nothing new here, it is just straight forward and nothing we haven't seen before. No really stand out scenes, not much interesting dialogue, story is just typical. I found myself constantly checking to see how much time was left and this is a 90 minute movie! So why all the love, I really don't understand it. Some people are even calling this a masterpiece. Really? I think these people have not seen enough movies.
It brought a new twist to the revenge genre, portraying the hero as more of a doofus than a superhero type. That aspect made it interesting. I have to agree with a lot of other people that the first 30 minutes or so were great, up until he gets to the sisters house. After that things get really slow and tedious. I felt like there was nothing really at stake since the main character seemed ok with dying. Things picked up once he was trying to get the arrow out of his leg and had the guy in the back of his car. After the scene by the shooting range it got slow again.
I felt the ending was kind of anticlimactic and lame. The fat dude told him not to make speeches, when he aims the gun to shoot the gun, and in the moment of truth what does he do? He starts making speeches. What a moron. And then the bowl headed kid comes and shoots him with a shotgun, but then lets him live. What another moron. And then guy was like "He's the son of your father and my mother" or something and I'm like "Huh? Where did that come from" And what was that kid doing in the back of the limo at the beginning (and why the *beep* did they have a limo?) he was just sitting back there while this dude covered in blood slashed the tire then got in and drove off. Only like a mile down the road does he start hitting the window. That scene made me say "what the *beep*?"
I personally loved the movie, but I can understand why you and other people wouldn't like it. It is definitely slow, the dialogue is very hard to hear most of the time, and no one really says much. It's not a remarkable movie for any specific reason, yet to me, everything worked together effortlessly to create a believable and engrossing movie. It was very real, without having to rely on most movie cliches, and the small "twist" wasn't some overblown crazy idea, it was simple. And it worked.
I appreciate the acting most of all, everyone behaved like real people would, and their expressions were fierce sometimes. Dwight and his sister Sam were amazing, he was nothing like your typical revenge seeking action hero. I also like how it wasted barely any time getting to the plot, and let us figure out most of the backstory on our own. For instance, the car he drives around is riddled with bullet holes, because it's the car his parents died in. I didn't even notice that until someone else mentioned it. This movie is full of tiny details like that.
If you didn't enjoy it, it's probably because it was slow-paced and quiet, literally to the point where I could barely make out the dialogue, and it's not filmed with much style. It doesn't do anything to captivate its audience, it's just a straight forward film about revenge, but its total performance is solid and a lot of people appreciate a well-made simple film. Some movies try too hard, but this one knew how to make more of less.
I will have to strongly disagree here. This movie had a ton of style. Every shot was beautiful and perfect for where the story was going. It's "style" is very reminiscent of No Country for Old Men - that being - gritty realism
