I see SIX NEW movies in cinemas EACH week, and I walked out of this one!

Can you imagine how bad it must have been??

Ten minutes of this tripe was enough to convince me I haven't seen worse acting - or script. Directing and cinematography were also at an all time low. I'd never walked out of a movie before (and I watch absolutely everything) - but out of this I just had to.

I feel sorry for the people that watch such "movies" and give them raving reviews.

reply

It's no wonder you didn't like it- your mind has been plagued with the mindless explosions/cheap laughs that is cinema today. Probably too original for your pallet.

Actually your walking out of the film reaffirms its prowess in my mind.

It's just not for simpletons.

I'm more than just a blonde with an a** that won't quit!

Maybe you should read again the very title of my thread, little stuck-up girlie.

Six on average new movies in the theatre a week, means I watch MOSTLY INDEPENDENT stuff. (Because the commercial stuff is no more than two movies a week, simple math.) And I like most of it.

This here - hipster porn.

I watch 7 or more a week in theaters and I almost peed my pants I didn't want to miss a moment of this

What do you seriously do ??

reply

Why on earth would you go see six new movies a week? Those are hours you can't get back. It's also kind of like going to a restaurant and ordering everything on the menu, then being angry when you don't like something. Discern!

Oh, and enjoy Smurfs 2 and 2 Guns this week. Definitely going to be money and time compulsively well spent.

I watch eight new movies a week, in theatres, with the director sitting beside me feeding me popcorn. I loved Frances Ha so much I'm making it nine a week from now on.

"Frances Ha" is a perfect, perfect film.

OP...wow, I say this without a note of condescension: but I feel sorry for you. The type of person that can't keep their a$$ still for more than 10 minutes, and then failing that, come and trash a film THAT THEY HAVEN'T EVEN SEEN.

You make it sound like you see lots of movies, then shame on you. Shame on you for not knowing better and sticking it out. It would be one thing if you were a tween who was probably put off just cause it was black and white, but to be a fan of cinema and so lazily dismiss a film...it's pathetic.

I'll pray to the cinema gods for your soul.

reply

I'm not necessarily defending the OP's entire position here, but I have to agree that the movie was not as good as several other movies released this summer. By any standard of storytelling (blockbuster or modestly scaled or other), "Frances Ha" fails to deliver. Many of its passionate defenders seem to believe that not liking the film reveals a lack of knowledge/appreciation for film as a whole. But that's simply not true. It is possible to dislike a movie whose fans regard it as a perfect work.

OnionRing, I don't think it's the usual "I'm a cineaste and you Phillistines just didn't GET it!" that you usually get on IMDB or the Internet in general, I think the OP's unreasonable tone has just got people's backs up. Bragging about how many movies he or she sees then declaring that (s)he walked out after ten minutes of Frances Ha...it's tantamount to trolling.

I can quite see how a lot of people would not like Frances Ha. I was on a knife edge myself - had I been in a bad mood, I probably would have hated it right from the "fighting" scene in the park it opens with. But I was feeling open minded and I let it in, and as a result I loved it.

I don't see how you can judge Frances Ha without seeing the whole movie. That being said, I heard the type and went to see the film. I just didn't care for it. The story was self-indulgent and adolescent. Frances Ha was 27 going on 13. She was so immature. I know this is a winner for lots of people, but it wasn't for me.

reply

I agree. I guess the director had a hard time coming up with something interesting to make a film about so decided to make her a 13 year old pressed into an adult body and write lot's of inane, pointless dialogue.

It felt funny at first, but fell apart as soon as I realised it had no content, just vacuous postering as an indie/hipster movie.

I love small, lowbudget films but this wasn't all that.

reply

I thought this film got better the further it went tbf. I was seriously tempted to leave after about the first 10 minutes as well, all the characters were just so pleased with themselves they were irritating the *beep* out of me, but either I got used to it or they got less annoying.

I see where you're coming from.
I too found both the character and the actress annoying.
And so immature !
But then the movie progresses and you realize that is actually what the whole story's about. So I think maybe you should have stuck around until the end of the film.

re: Drifting through life while at the same time moaning about how poor they are while living in $1,200 a month quarters. It's like that one chap said, how insulting to those suffering from real financial hard-ships.

Ah, there's nothing like "Bohemian poverty"! I recall in my younger daze in my city's punk rock/new wave/what-ever scene: There was a number of people that whined -- or pretended to whine, I'm really not sure -- about "being broke" or "not having any money." Yet many of these people seemed to have $$ when it came to booze, cigarettes, tattoos, and/or trendy clothing.

Do you confuse poor with homeless?

I tend to agree with you. We watched it at home and found it pretty insipid. But it was kind of like watching a car wreck -- I couldn't look away and wanted to see how it turned out -- so we watched to the end. It did get better, but I found it pretty hard to care about any of the characters.
