...aside from the last 20 mins or so. The majority of this movie was decent, if not a bit generic at times. The action was good and it had some decent horror elements here and there. I even kinda enjoyed the world building more than I thought I would. I'd probably give it a 6.5/10 if I had to rate it.
Agreed, it was a fun ride. Action adventure, with a bit of comedy. It works. No horror, for sure. But one cannot judge a book for something it is not, imo.
True, by that comparison indeed. However, when I think about the Mummy, it always takes me back to Boris Karloff and his rendition. And here horror was in the high seat. I suppose it all depends on the reference.
But still, I wouldn't say this Mummy is not outright scary... when it is surrounded by lighter comedic shenanigans, it takes away the impact of the scares.
I have had the Karloff film in my collection for a long time but still haven't watched it. I need to rectify that.
This film definitely wanted to try to be all things to all people. It had horror elements (large parts of it are basically a zombie film), adventure elements, and enough comedy to make sure things didn't get too serious.
I actually think it's an underrated film. It can't stand up the the '99 film, for sure, but it's an enjoyable enough ride in its own right. I've watched it twice and am sure I'll watch it again at some point. It deserved to do better at the box office and should not have derailed the Dark Universe.
I feel like I am one of very few people that not only liked this movie but loved it. I found it really exciting and entertaining. It really didn’t feel like a Mummy story though, I can admit that. It’s like the 2006 Miami Vice film I love that too but it really doesn’t feel like Miami Vice that we are used to.
Since my previous post, I've actually bought this film on 4K Blu-Ray. Not sure I'd quite say that I "love" it, but I definitely think it's an enjoyable horror-adventure film. As I said before, I really feel like it deserved a better reception. It felt like a lot of people were being haters just to be haters, or just because it wasn't the '99 film. It was a pretty good start to the Dark Universe and it's unfortunate that others didn't feel the same way.
I give the '99 film a solid 9 or maybe even a 9.5 while I give this one a 7.5. As you say, it doesn't really feel like a Mummy story. But it's still a fun a movie.
The crazy thing is that the movie made $410 million and yet, they tell us, it still lost money. What a strange world we live in where a movie can make almost half-a-billion and still be a failure.
