'Breh'

Watched this the other day. I guess like a few others I found the movie a bit over rated whilst still being a relatively enjoyable flick.

One thing that grated on me to no end was Oscar's constance use of 'breh' instead of 'bro' or 'bra'. Did this drive anyone else up the wall!? It seemed like it was way overused and made his 'gangster' chat seem a little cheesy.

Stupid thing to notice but it just bugged the hell outta me!?

Not one bit. i actually loved that he used "breh", especially in the grocery store where he says it like 5 times haha it made me smile. Btw not bad acting by Jordan.

I agree about Jordan. He's headed for big things. I think Octavia Spencer walked away with the film, though. She raised the level of every scene she was in.

Yeah, well, we've hated "DUDE" for decades, never made a thread about it on the internetz.

When I see a friend, I usually say " Hello, bother-from-another-mother "

I am watching it for the first time at this very moment, I'm 30 minutes in, and it is bothering me a bit. However, I say "dude" a lot so...I have no right really to complain.

gtmail77, wow that is incredibly insensitive and ignorant, which are also qualitys of the cop that shot him, THAT is why he got shot.

reply

How small-minded, insensitive and ignorant of you to say. Might as well have been holding the gun yourself. Its comments like that keep our civil development at a stand still.

I live in the Bay Area. It's unfortunate but very real phrase that is spoken particularly in the East Bay where Oscar Grant was from (and in some cases, used just as frequently). Much like 'hella', it is quite annoying. But it definitely added to the local authenticity.

That said, living in the Bay Area, the only regional detail that bugged me was the use of "'frisco". Nobody here calls it that. I was kind of surprised that the director, who is an Oakland native, threw that in.
