Why was he going for his taser? Oscar Grant was handcuffed and lying face down on the ground.
Putting myself in a cop's shoes for a moment...
I'd enter a hostile situation in high alert, adrenaline pumping and ready to take control to restore order.
I'd look for the violent ones, the angry, loud ones, the runners and the defiant. Really, I'd look at whomever was not showing deference, and obedience, to my authority and commands. You know, check to see who is staying still, hands in view and displaying cooperation - then focus on who is left still in need of externally applied control.
If the mere presence of police does not inspire a person to shut up and obey, then the police will order commands to do so. If they aren't obeyed, then they take steps to achieve, de facto, obedience.
An arrest means that the citizen turns around and puts their hands together to present themselves to be cuffed. While the citizen may verbally complain while this happens, they need to keep it respectful enough that the police are not feeling ANY threat to their authority and dominance of the situation and of that citizen. If that citizen verbally abuses the authority and chooses to add angry expressions to the situation, then they may as well say, "I am like the prey that runs from a lion and in doing so, appears to be dinner."
So, why the taser? Oscar had stood up and beat his own chest while speaking angrily AFTER being commanded to sit down. Please note the men beside Oscar whom knew enough to keep their hands in plain view and to stay down! Even after making the police escalate to the next step - putting him completely down on the ground, Oscar can be seen to be kicking with his feet, and struggling against the police, raising his head and chest. Oscar had lived in prison. He KNEW to submit and he CHOSE to fight, instead. So, a taser was needed to apply that external motivation Oscar needed to subdue him.
To say that the hostility shown those young men had nothing to do with race is naive at best.
See my explanation above. Please note... it has nothing to do with racism against black men - something Oscar didn't control, and it has everything to do with a criminal choosing to act like a criminal. If race is involved here, and I think it is, it's about how much hatred young black males are taught to express towards white people, particularly, white people in a position of authority, over them.
I think it is that hatred ^^^ that confuses young black men to this point of self-destructive stupidity, such as Oscar exemplifies.
