Is this movie really good or is it just a weird movie?

shareDepends. If you're a "movie" person, as opposed to a "film" person, your time is better spent on something else. If you're a "film" person, odds are you'll appreciate it. That's a gross oversimplification, but I'll stand by it. I wouldn't call it "weird" (at least not "aggressively weird"), or "blurry"(?). It's either slow or contemplative depending on your POV. It certainly doesn't hustle through a plot, so if you insist on a "story," as it were, don't bother.
"Really good" doesn't mean anything if I don't know what else you consider "really good." If the prospect of spending 100 minutes on a well-shot, low-key, black and white Persian vampire romance kindles your interest, then you're good to go.

Yes.
I understand. Thank you for telling me. -The masked bandit
If you don't like foreign films you're not going to like it. As simple as that. If you have patience and an open mind and don't call movies pretentious then you might like it.
shareWell, it's still an American film. Specifically Farsi-language American film.
shareAs a general rule of thumb I don't enjoy many subtitled movies. It seemed to be heavily influenced by Darren Aronofsky's movie PI and to a lessor degree Requiem of a Dream though... At least that's what it reminded me of... I thoroughly enjoyed it.
shareI compare it to Only God Forgives: looks and sounds fantastic, but narratively empty and ultimately dull.
I walked out after 3/4 because I didn't care about the characters, there was no narrative drive and hitting the WCs for a poop seemed more interesting. (I have never walked out a movie before this one).
That's my take, but clearly there's a love or it.
I watched the entire film. it looked great, great atmosphere. it looked like it was going somewhere but in the end it felt like it didnt?
i think this could have been achieved in a 20 minute short
Wow kudos for not walking out of God forgives if this one somehow drove you away, but to the original poster, it's a fantastic film. I'm surprised to see so much dissension on this excellent film. It's not that slow, beautiful with a pretty exciting tale. But ya know if you like action films primarily this isn't an action film it's a slow burn drama/thriller.
shareAnyone who doesn't finish a film has no right to have an opinion on it.

It's fine if you don't like it. But look how you reflect the same attitude you disparage. You belittle people with no tolerance for other opinions and then offers no tolerance yourself. It's a well acted films with excellent cinematography. The story is light but the atmosphere is superb. It's an excellent American film. Yes it's foreign language and set in Iran, it had a lot of American influence tho but this allows for a decent commentary on Iranian culture and a display of vulgarity and sexuality you would never see in a real Iranian film. This film is good, in my opinion. You may not like it but that certainly doesn't mean your opinion is the only one nor does it make this film bad
shareIt's actually set in California and Iranian American.
shareTotally disagree. This movie had great cinematography, great music and a long-lasting feeling of dispair throughout. Emotions and thoughts are conveyed with no words spoken. Not many movies do that well.
Although, if YOU didn't understand the emotions it was conveying, I can see why you didn't get it or didn't like it. :)
The irony in this comment is worth its weight in gold.
Wait... Not gold... Poo, Weight in poo.
After watching this, I asked myself, "If this was in color with a bigger budget and in English, would anyone watch it?" I think not.
A lot of the novelty for this film is that it's billed as the film Iranian horror film despite the fact that it's an American film and isn't really horror at all. Once you look past the novelty, I found the film pretty meh.
"So it goes" -Slaughterhouse Fiveshare
So true. Americans are so self-depreciating when it comes to foreign novelty. It's like they treat foreigners as pets or special handicap kids, accepting every art attempt they make and put it in the "If you didn't like it, you just didn't understand it" category. Making them almost incapable of speaking ill on their films and overrating everything that they do.
shareNo. There are many good weird movies.
shareIt really comes down to if you are able to enjoy atmospheric films which asks more of your emotions than your brain and not mind the absence of a expositional-dialogue heavy plot.
If you don't have anything nice to say, at least make it logical
