I hated the kid too, but he became a lot more tolerable after his mom started giving him drugs. Dunno if that was intentional.

I just said "wow" when the kid was on the screen until he started taking pills, and, after that, I had to say "wow" when the mom was on the screen. I did note that the mom was amazingly ineffectual before getting "possessed" by a supposed "demon." Typical bad kid / bad parent combo that you see in real life, only taken to the extreme in this movie. Then the kid turned into Kevin from Home Alone, which didn't help much.

I admit being exremely annoyed with the kid at first and expecting some sort of demonic possession. As the movie progressed I started to realize that the mom has bigger issues that have affected the kid since he was born. In the end the kid had more sense than any adult to realize that his mom was losing it and the griefmonster had to be dealt with.
