Watching Alien: Covenant (especially in 4K HD) after the release of Alien: Romulus
I'm sure all you guys will go 'Wow!'
To begin with, let's talk about the music. The Covenant theme is a hair-raising composition, especially how it blends with the original Alien theme. The creepy Spores theme, along with the Medbay and Terraforming Bay themes, showcases Jed Kurzel's class of work and Scott's impeccable choice in music direction.
The World-Building: Scott has always been exceptional at world-building, known for providing an immersive experience. Covenant is no different, as it makes you feel like you're truly part of the adventure. This is thanks to the attention to detail, which you catch more of with repeat viewings.
Romulus also did a nice job. Of course, there was no adventure like a planetary expedition, but Fede didn't leave any loose ends when it came to attention to detail.
However, Covenant is undeniably Grander!
The Horror: From the Spores to the Medbay to the Lander explosion and David's arrival—this sequence is riveting and a testament to top-notch direction. The Backburst scene and the Backburster are, any day, more impactful than any of the Chestburst scenes in Romulus.
The Neomorph is a breath of fresh air! It's admirably unique, offering something different from the overplayed Xenomorphs. Still, it ties into the origins, grounding the sequel in its lore.
The Xenomorph: Covenant's Xenomorph is far more lethal and vicious compared to Romulus' Xenomorphs, which felt more like brainless bugs, reminiscent of the ones in Aliens.
Story: Covenant tells a long, intricate story compressed into a 2-hour film. A lot happens—many twists, turns, and a grand escape, leading to the final fight and twist. The ending will leave you begging for a sequel.
Romulus seems to traverse its story while paying homage to previous films, but it leaves us with crews carrying artificially created black goo, contrived in such a way that you don't care much, only expecting a sequel to see what happens in Yvaga—with a yawn.
Covenant belongs to a lore that holds unanswered questions, sparking mysteries and discussions (just like Prometheus). It remains unapologetically unclear on some points—classic Alien mystery.
Romulus is the perfect "Fede's Don't Breathe Alien" movie. It did a great job being what it is. Expecting deep mysteries from this isn't wise.
Finally, watching Covenant in 4K at home offers a fresh, versatile, and thoroughly enjoyable experience after watching this "Xenomorph Action with an Alien Baby in its Tail" movie. One of the best of the franchise (easily no. 3 - after Alien & Aliens)
Thanks Fede to make Alien: Covenant look great.
