The one thing they were trained and programmed their whole life not to do? That makes sense.
Then, plus, they have a colonizing ship and very few landers? There is a high probability of those craft being lost or in high demand, the whole mission depends on them ... even in Aliens, militarily or colonization you need a reliable redundant connection to the mother ship.
