I think they would've been more successful and that's the movie everyone wants, not a pretentious film with two androids playing the flute for 5 long minutes lol! They just don't know how to handle this franchise anymore! Alien: Covenant was ok but could've been way better and kinda sucks compared to the others. Hell, Alien Resurrection was better than this in some ways as much as I hate to say it. SMH
When Alien 3 and Alien 4 are better than the prequels made by the same director who made the classic original, you have serious problems because Alien 3/4 weren't too great lol! Why is Ridley so obsessed with this David character? I don't think it's that interesting or original, it's been done before. We've seen robots go crazy many times, 80's movies are littered with them! I think seeing the Alien homeworld or the Engineers homeworld and have a movie take place there would be a nice step in evolution of the series because we haven't seen that yet but noooo......we get a rehash of Alien 1 and Blade Runner mixed together instead. Renny Harlin wanted to go to the Alien planet for Alien 3 but Fox said NO!! We'll just remake Alien again and just set it on a prison planet(WTF?....why?) with overly religious rapist prisoners trying to sodomize Ripley and we'll kill everyone off as well. Fox has zero logic.
Yep. Just turned on Alien Resurrection for a few minutes, and it's amazing how true to the Alien franchise it is compared to this. David created the Alien? Forget it. That immediately takes out the wonder and excitement of Alien.
I wouldn't mind if both Prometheus and Covenant are de-canonized and are announced to be in their own alternate universe.
Blomkamp's Alien 5 would have been a lot better I think.
So very true, and while I don't consider Alien 3 and Alien: Ressurection to be true Alien movies, they were better than these two new turds of movies. Truer to the original material, and what's worse, better stories/characters. Oh dear God...
The only good thing to come of these movies, was Shaw herself - She was a fucking boss when pressed, and the epitome of a survivor/fighter imo.
It's time Ridley admits he can't make movies anymore (or recognize a good script...) and pass on the torch.
He can still make movies but just not Alien, he has no clue what to do with it anymore. Wasn't Alien Covenant supposed to be planet of the Engineers? What happened to that? Seems like Fox has a leash on Ridley after all.
I disagree, i think this movie is more powerful than alien resurrection, I'd even rate it higher than Alien. The music, the atmosphere especially in the first 30mins was exhilarating. I have rewatched this film mamy times now, even the flute scene doesn't bother me. I am eager and hopexul they continue this plot.
I don't understand this fan fixation on Blomkamp as if he is some kind of Alien saviour... He's not... He made one interesting movie about alien racism as an alagory for Aparthied.. That's it... The rest of his movies are decidedly average...
Ridley Scott gave us the original Alien movie as well as the interesting Prometheus movie (not to mention BladeRunner and half a dozen other entertaining movies).. His only real fault with the Alien series was giving in to fanboy and studio pressure to give people more "xenomorph" and more kills... Alien: Covenant was still a fun space slasher movie that gave us one of the most iconic scenes from cinema last year... People will be talking about Fassbender teaching himself embouchure techniques for years... ๐
But aside from Scott, there are any number of directors or writers who could make an Alien movie... These movies have been experimental from the first James Cameron action-adventure, we-are-family Aliens sequel... Let any decent director have a crack at it, change things as they wish, it has already been perverted, haf fun with it ๐
What i don't understand is the sentimental narrative that the fans were deprived of a masterful Blomkamp Alien epic... Why this narrative where he and the fans are some kind of victims, denied their catharsis, waiting for salvation?
It's absurd... I mean there was even a series of Alien VS. Predetor movies... Get a hold of yourselves... A Blomkamp Alien movie would have probably been as average as his other movies, but with even more studio constraints and pandering to various earlier Alien series movies and fan service... You didn't miss anything special...
He was already kind of pandering with the concept he had pushed out to bring back deceased characters and continuing the film as if certain sequels didnโt exist. This to me has always been lazy writing and points to his lack of originality with the concept, at least for me that is.
Covenant just wasn't that good and there's nothing that original about it, it felt like a studio playing it safe type of film. It just wasn't up to standards of a Ridley Scott film and not even up to Prometheus standards. Prometheus felt fresh, Covenant felt like stale bread......been there, done that. At least Blomkamp's Alien 5 ideas seemed original and inventive, whether they would've worked or not is debatable. Why not do something new for the franchise instead of rehashing the same damn Alien 1 formula? Why do fan boys want the same shit over and over? Fox dropped the ball on this series and they've done it to most of their other properties as well because they're a bunch of dumb fucks. Does anybody really want to see another X Men film, Die Hard: Year One, or another Alien prequel? It just doesn't excite me anymore.
Yeah, they played it safe with Covenant... Ironically Prometheus was a bigger commercial success despite going so far away from the earlier movies... ๐
I like this movie a lot, literally anything is better than Alien Resurrection or the AVPs, this was a better application of Scott's time than Blade Runner 2049, though maybe that would've been better if he directed, I like Villaneuve but I feel everything you say about this film about that one
I don't hate Covenant but it should've been way better and it could've been better. Fox got scared from the Prometheus backlash so they wanted Scott to play it safe instead of doing something cutting edge like planet of the Engineers like he originally planned. These prequels weren't supposed to be 100% Alien films but something else that was being explored and Covenant pissed on that and copped out. Nah, I have to disagree with you on the Blade Runner sequel, it was a far better film than Covenant wished it was and I don't think Scott has it in him to make films like BR 2049 anymore.....he's changed. 2049 took the story to the next level and it's really deep, Covenant had the potential to do that but it chose to be more formulaic.
