1. I didn't know that the hair on synthetics grew like normal humans.

2. Who was the David-looking character on the ship that came down and released the cloud of insects that killed all of the Engineers, where did that ship come from, and why do it?

That David looking character was David. Where the ship came from is explained in Prometheus (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1446714/), as was the reason for doing it, to a point.

Without saying too much, in case you watch Prometheus, David is part of a crew of a ship sent to a planet by a madman looking for the 'Creator'. While there David is given orders to do whatever it takes to find certain answers to certain questions.. David, being what he is, takes this literally, and in so doing becomes psychopathic. The events that occur on this planet lead to David and Elizabeth being that ship, and David releases the pathogen as a way to study its effects.

By 1) - we know he heals in similar fashion to humans. And if he heals it means he regenerates. Hair is essentially regeneration of hair cells... in other words, if an android heals like humans, so should his hair grow like humans.

A question for anyone who could be bothered...

With David left in charge of the ship at the end of the movie, why did he decide to continue to the original destination instead of immediately landing back in the engineer's home planet and returning to everything he's researched so far?

seriously though, I think he can do whatever experiments he wants on the ship and he now has the opportunity to infiltrate the rest of human society instead of being stuck on a dead planet...

He's only got 2 tiny xeno embryos to play with. And as far as I know, the crew of Covenant never managed to get a message back to Earth about the change of plan, so David can continue to work on the Engineer's planet with a whole colony ship of hosts to play with.
