Those Awful 'American' Accents

OK - I'm not one to complain much about this kind of stuff and I usually don't notice things like this - but the "American" accents on this show sometimes drive me nuts. Rose in Season 1 was awful but got better in Season 2.

Selfridge's mother isn't that great in either season.

I wish they could use real American actors. :)

The Selfridges daughters' accents are irritating! I actually don't have a problem with the grandmother's or Rose's.

Back to the daughters: they sound like molls out of a Jimmy Cagney movie, not rich young ladies who spent at least part of their youth in London. It is especially jarring when one is talking to the brother, who has a perfect posh accent. I don't think they would sound that differently coming from the same family.

The Selfridge sisters' accents are irritating. Even their mouths looked contorted when they try to force the accent. So jarring to hear Violette say "Vecterrr Caw-lay-Ahnooo" over and over. The actress who plays the older sister seems to be copying the younger one more and more. She started off more like Gordon but last night she forced the American accent. Why couldn't they just hire American actresses, or actresses who have lived in both USA and UK? Andrew Garfield can do both accents because he has dual roots in both countries.

Why don't they pay attention to Jeremy Piven?

reply

He's the only American in the cast huh?

reply

Seems to be. Since he portrays theirs father and he is from Chicago they should sound like him.

I'm not sure how Violette's French suitor Jaques could bear to marry her and hear her butcher his name for the next 40 years or so! Jyaaaaack!

Agree.

I have watched and listened to a lot of UK and Australian programming as an American. I am sensitive to accents. Rose's accent reminds me of Lady Grantham from Downton Abbey and the actress portraying that role is from America. Regionally they are about the same. I tend to be more interested in the regional accents of both countries. To me it's more distracting to hear a bad imitation, for example, of an accent from Montgomery, AL (the character) by an actor from Los Angeles, CA. I don't know if you're from the UK but if you are do your actors/actresses sometimes butcher regional accents or dialects?

I didn't have a problem with most of the accents, but I do agree that the woman playing Mr. Selfridge's mother is all over the place. Maybe his mother has European roots, which lead him to England in the first place?
