amazing film- ONE FLAW: spoilers

According to the laws of Vampirism Derek could not have been a vampire. A stake through the heart KILLS vampires and he also had a reflection...does anybody know why?

reply

Vampires spread that rumor about mirrors so they could 'prove' they aren't vampires to gullible humans. ;)

reply

They took liberties with the lore. Which is fine. I thought it was refreshing.

reply

the film was excellent...but those two things confused me.

reply

thought the first half was decent.
but the second half sucked all the life out of it.

They point out that if he's a vampire he should be able to turn into mist or a wolf. Clearly looking at the typical vampire rules was not going to help him. As with a lot of vampire movies, we discover the vampire rules by seeing what happens in the film.

If a wooden stake through the heart killed him, that would undermine the scenario whereby he cannot kill himself. After all, it would be easy enough to just stab himself in the chest and it would be a pretty quick way of finishing himself off.

It felt like perhaps standing out in the sunlight might kill him, but of course he might still heal back up when it came to night time. (Interestingly, the idea that sunlight kills vampires isn't actually a prominent part of vampire mythology. Rather it was introduced because of a visual effect they wanted to use in the silent film "Nosferatu" and it has become such a major part of the public consciousness that it has remained a vital part of vampire lore ever since.

I got your True Blood reference. High five.

From what i know some versions of the myth says that to kill a vampire you need a stake of a certain kind of wood like ashwood.
For the reflection i was expecting derek to gradually disappear when in front of the mirror. It would have been a great scene indeed.

One thing I don't get, though. At the end credits scene it's revealed that Cliff has also turned. Does that mean every person Derek feeds on (by biting them) gets turned into a vampire?

reply

there isn't anything after the credits- where r u seeing this???

reply

There is a scene during the credits.(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2309961/trivia?tab=cz&ref_=tt_trv_cc) Three teens broke into a house and got attacked by the now pale and sickly looking Cliff.

reply

I looked through the end credits and saw nothing :(

Oh its there. I just saw it

Yes, I know. The myth is extremely loosely defined. It ranges between the following two concepts, basically;

Count Dracula: gentleman in a nice suit with real magic power that has lived for thousands or years, feeds only on womens blood, has no reflection, is hurt by a variety of weird things such as holy water, crucifixes, stakes, silver, and coming to peoples homes uninvited. Also has to sleep in a coffin, can shapeshift, teleport, mindcontrol, levitation... The list goes on, and on, and on...

Proto-vampire: mindless beast enslaved by a nasty curse / disease. These monsters are recent tweaks to the old myth, and are basically a combination of old-school vamps, and sci-fi / magic realism. They are rethinking the entire concept by asking the question; "what would be a realistic rendition of a person that is forced to kill and eat other people by an unknown biological affliction?" It's also a way to play with the fact that no one really knows what a vampire is supposed to be able to do, since all of the popular and more "conservative" portrayals of vampires all differ from each other. Watch 30 Days of Night, it has a really cool take on this concept.

EDIT: Oh, and this movie fcking kicks 4ss : D Really original vampire action in this one. If you (like I) are starting to get a little sleepy watching hollywood horror, this is for you.

Every Vampire movie or book changes the rules on what aspects they want to follow. He also wasn't invited into that one guy Beuhr's house and still walked in. They pretty much made it so that he's Infinite not just immortal. I really liked that angle!!

reply

I thought you had to kill (stake thru heart) of the vampire who bit you?

--Whats the matter? The CIA got you pushing too many pencils--

If you go back to older lore about European vampire myths, staking a vampire through the heart doesn't kill them, but it has to be with ash wood I seem to recall, could be wrong. It immobilizes them - literally "stakes them to the ground" and then to kill them you have to cut their head off, stuff the mouth with roses, burn the body and immerse the head in running water.

Give me a hedgehog and I'll show you.

and you have to say "ta da!" after you do all that
come on, stop spreading incomplete information

According to the Laws of Fictional Writing. A writer can make up any kind of vampire they want and don't have to adhere to anyone else's rules in creating their world. These are apparently different kinds of vampires.

This rue applies to zombies, werewolves, ghosts, and any other monsters mythical creatures, or creepy crawlies the writers decide to tell a story about.

Because these ind of monsters aren't real.

reply

Haha you win

reply

Cutting of the head kills anything. He's not going to grow a new head, and really that shotgun blast should have been irrecoverable

reply

But it wasn't - he had regenerative powers. So yes, he would grow a new head if you cut his completely off.
