Was that Hvitserk being led in chains before Ivar and his bride-to-be in the ending ceremony?

Hard to conceive of who else it could have been, there are no other real candidates.

After that build up it'd be dumb if turned out to be just some random nobody. So if they were going for the suspenseful cliffhanger by concealing his face it sort of fell flat.

Edit: On further reflection, I seriously doubt it's Hvitserk and is most likely some random nobody Ivar's demanding as a godly sacrifice to him. But I still hate cheap tricks of cliffhangers like this.

Edit2: Ok, my best guess now is that scene was a nightmare premonition of the Seer's that we see him wake up from in the very last shot. A random person would make no sense. Sacrificing Hvitserk also wouldn't make sense in light of Hvitserk warning to Ivar earlier in the episode that he was also a son of Ragnar and asked him what he thought the people of Kattegat would do if Ivar harmed a hair on his head.

If that was Hvitserk being a little too full of himself, I think Ivar would have stood his ground. Instead he backed down from Hvitserk's challenge and suggested he consider leaving with Harald.

This is a pretty intriguing plot development. Given the conversation the two brothers had earlier you'd be inclined to think it was indeed Hvitserk. A number of reasons why: Ivar has a grudge against his brothers for the way they have treated him as a disabled person; and he fears that Hvitserk is not exactly a strong supporter of him, a "weak link" that might one way or another allow threats to undermine Ivar or end his life (remember the mad girl threatening to kill Ivar and plotting away and Hvitserk nevertheless showing her kindness); Hvitserk might be seen as a high value sacrifice to the gods; and of course that malevolent look from Ivar that might mean "I'm out to get you".

However, I'm wondering about the scene of the seer looking panicked has if he's had a vision that's disturbed him. Why is he afraid and of what? Is he seeing the demise of one of the sons of Ragnar or is it his own demise that he sees? Is the seer the sacrifice that Ivar is making?

reply

Hmmm yes, maybe the seer?

I hadn't thought of that.

Whoever it is, Ivar "the god" has gone off the deep end.

reply

I think the whole episode is a dream of the Seer.

reply

I revised my prediction, I'm convinced it's a dream by the seer since we see him wake up in the final scene.

Kind of pisses me off because this is similar to the bogus misdirection in the earlier preview where we see Ivar get stabbed.

reply

Has to be Hvitserk, i mean i don't know who else it could be, i don't think its the Seer cause it seemed as if he was seeing what was happening at the same time. Plus if it was gonna be the Seer i doubt they'd show him during it instead of just surprising us with the reveal.

Theres no real notable character in Kadegat other than Hvitserk that would be a big name for the gods. It would make no sense for it to be a random villager after what Ivar said to Hvitserk about wanting a name the gods would know.

But yeah with them hiding the sacrifice's face with the hood it does make it seem unlikely its Hvitserk, cause why wouldn't it just show him since Ivar already pretty much told Hvitserk it was gonna be him? I just don't know who else it could be though.

reply

Exactly. That was how I initially thought it through too. No other obvious candidates and it does seem like the Seer is pretty disturbed over the prospect. That would only make sense if it was Hvitserk. It was just weak they made it a cliffhanger.

reply

Yeah it does kinda take away from it they ended the episode on a cliffhanger with it, would have packed more of a punch had they just done the sacrifice then ended it. Just felt like they wanted to use a cheap tactic to draw views in for the next episode.

reply

Oh please.

The show is popular enough without resorting to "cheap tactics" to draw viewers.

That's what made the tactic all the more pointless.

If Hirst wanted to create a "wow" moment to be discussed among the Vikings fan base the subsequent week, revealing it was Hvitserk would have accomplished that feat just fine.

Instead we get a cheap cliffhanger.

reply

I think it's a Seer dream that we see him wake up from in the last shot. It's the only thing that makes any sense.

At this point, you're just throwing wild guesses into the wind as much as the other fans are. I'd just rather wait 'till the next episode shows up (last of the 2 for this season). There was a trailer already of the next episode and mention of people saying Hvitserk joins with Rollo and the possibility of the Seer being a sacrifice. There is also mention of it being a random person lookalike. Heh, lucky for Ivar, there are no paternity tests for his boneless impotence.

reply

When has it not been wild guesses? I'm not a seer.

I'm just relaying my hatred of cliffhangers and my certainty now it's a Seer dream.

The Seer's not going to be sacrificed when we see him wake up in the last shot. That figure being brought up to Ivar for sacrifice was not some 250 year old wrinkly guy. That's a terrible guess.

And it was just a random "Lagherta" woman... Oh boy, i sure miss Ragnar, Athelstan, Egbert, etc
