Russia-bashing, Europe-bashing, Stereotypes Galore.

Man, I had to cringe at all the anti-French and anti-Russian jabs. Nice to see Hollywood still has a balanced and open-minded approach to understanding other cultures--all that's missing is Sambo in blackface and a Jew with a big nose.

Also, the Gulag system has been out of existence for decades, but I get it: we have a new Cold War to promote.

On the plus side, I think Tina Fey was sexy as hell as the prison guard!

reply

I kinda feel that the american system when it comes to work is so opressive, that they dont get our system. A fair system to them is excessive.

reply

The gulag system is still there, effectively. Just ask the members of Pussy Riot who were imprisoned in it.

reply

Well if you can ask them then it wasn't a gulag! And what about them anyway? They broke the law and went to jail. Perhaps you should ask people like Genarlow Wilson about the US system or perhaps The Young Family, all served or currently serving 20 odd years in prison for petty cannabis dealing or maybe James Cox, poor guy had cancer and cannabis was all that worked for him, grew his own plants and landed himself 15 years in jail and their house was confiscated. Bet these people wished they lived in Russia.

There is a lot of unjustified criticism and hatred aimed at the US but your justice and prison system isn't one of them.

reply

US got the most amount of prisoners than any other country (eclipsing what Gulag had on average annually: ~2.5 millions vs. ~1.5 millions). Corporations need more prisoners as they are dirty cheap labor (labor, just like in Gulag). I am sure there is strong element of corruption among judges or your society and system is extremely unhealthy. Pick your poison.
PS: Where Pussy Riot were was hardly a prison, it was a settlement basically for those who did a mild crime.

reply

With all the PC crap going on it's really hard to be bothered by the "stereotypes galore"...sorry. I guess I'm a horrible person.

"Sir Ian McKellen? That dude must be knee-deep in boob."

reply

Yes, because other countries don't ever have stereotypes of Americans in their films.

reply

Well, there are not that many movies from other countries out there let alone about Americans. Americans on the other hand spread their stuff like a plague.

reply

There are more films collectively from other countries than just from one individual country. Now, more watched is another story.

I get why this may have bothered you, but it did not bother me for the following reasons:

1.) Nothing in here suggests that the film wants us to believe that ALL Russians, French, etc. are like this.

2.) The Muppets have an entire character in Sam the Eagle devoted to satirizing the U.S.A. and American stereotypes of hyperpatriotism.

3.) The point of the joke seems to be how outdated and silly these stereotypes all are.

That's nothing. If they would start making jokes of blacks, mexicans, natives etc then we would talk.

reply

But you don't have a problem with Sam the Eagle or the Swedish Chef? Two longstanding characters that are just walking, talking parodies of two different nationalities.
What a hypocrite.

If I never meet you in this life, let me feel the lack

reply

I thought that the characterization a of the French and Russians was spot on! LOL! "Oh, time for ze 6-hour lunch!" Spot on French!

reply

It's certainly been my personal experience!

If they had done a dumb American joke, I wouldn't be offended. I'd agree! The latest election is proof of that! hah!
