Could have been a masterpiece

The biggest issue I had with this was that it couldn't let itself have a serious moment. Several times it had a beautiful thing going but ruined it with silly comedy. I understand that this is a kid's movie, but the first two weren't as cheesy with their humor.
Also, Kai seemed like he wasn't as fleshed out as the other villains.
I wish Mads has stayed on for it, but Simmons did well.

wow i thought the movie was too serious just like most hollywood movies. I dont mind serious its but the serious bits were just so generic. the serious bits just felt forced. I wish the movie would be more light hearted and have less drama in it or have more drama in it.

I agree, we had to leave early because my kid was bored, was talking,, moving seats and generally being Spain.. I thought it was ok but trying to be too deep for a kids film.

reply

that wasnt my problem. dont think this a problem because it is a kids movie, i feel the same way about comedies for adults i like kids movies when they are deep because they can actually be useful for kids but the "deep" kids movies actually feel grounded and more serious while kung fu panda 3 just felt more inconsistent, it was a straight up comedy sometimes and sometimes serious and i couldnt feel the emotion of the characters at all . it should have been like the 2nd movie, right amout on seriousness and comedy.

Agree in every way.

Really? Did you forget the scene with Po's mom? Also, the Kungfu Panda movies were never meant to be masterpieces. Well done? Yes. But not 10/10 movies. Though I do agree with some criticisms like The Furious Five not getting much screen time or development.

That moment didn't feel particularly deep though. It felt kind of shoe-horned in, but because we already know what happened to Po's mother in the past, and we know his father is still alive from the second movie, the whole scene lacks any sort of gravitas from a unique revelation - pretty much like the whole movie.

Yup, esp. the fight in the Ghost world was ruined by the sudden silliness. It started so epic when Po gained the power and then he became a douchebag again. ---Lincoln Lee: I lost a partner.Peter Bishop: I lost a universe!

I absolutely agree with the OP! My thoughts exactly!!

But that is Po's personality, that is part of his chi, his life energy. The humor and child like awe that he has. That is what makes him a unique character.

They started out with a good back story for Kai, that he and Oogway were like brothers but they ended up dropping this and just made him "the bad guy". It would have been interesting to see them interact when Po took him back to the spirit realm.

I've watched this movie on Netflix twice in the last 24 hrs so that's why these thoughts are fresh! Loved this movie even more than the first 2.
