Erroneous Plot Twist Predictions?

From just reading the plot summary and a few quick reviews, I thought the kids would discover that the old man was an alien of some sorts and have the tables turned on them (obviously I went into this movie genre blind).

As I was watching the film, I thought maybe the old man all ready had surveillance cameras installed inside his home, making him aware of the kids attempted project from the very start.

Yeah, I thought something like you did---that the old guy would have gradually figured out what was going on, and flipped the script on them. I thought they were going to discover that he had some horrible secret locked up in the basement or something like that--that would have been equally cool and scary,lol.
