As a matter of fact, Shakespeare actually had some villains of that ilk.
Like, take a closer look at the evil bastard Jago from "Othello".
There's no real depth to that guy or what he does.
But he's only there to be an asshole and hurt and even murder people just because he can.
Yes, I will agree that some villains from this show are equally over the top.
However, most of them seem to have more of a proper motive for their actions than what Jago has for his.
Like for example, Regina is clearly in love with George and wants to marry him.
And later on, it is revealed that she's actually mentally insane and has to stay at an asylum for four years.
But we don't know what Jago tries to accomplish by what he does or why he's so evil.
Furhermore, Shakespeare's plays were not originally meant to be high-brow fancy literature.
This might be hard for people today to imagine.
However, theater in Shakespeare's days functioned as the popular entertainment for everybody.
So I would say that Shakespeare's plays are more like modern soap operas than what you might think...
