Spidey Sense??? Daily Bugle???

Somewhat disappointed these mainstays were missing. Particularly spidey sense, could have easily been incorporated. Must have been a deliberate choice to leave it out - I wonder why. Nevertheless many other things were done right.

I absolutely hated that those elements where dropped from the movie as well as the lack of interest in photography and no references to Uncle Ben. This didn't seem at all like a Spider-Man movie.

reply

The Spidey Sense is not entirely missing. He still has those lightning fast reflexes, they're just not focused on with the bullet-time effect used in previous films.

I'm guessing the Bugle wasn't brought up because this film is primarily about his high school life. Plus, the main reason Parker started working for the Daily Bugle in the comics was to make extra money. With Stark backing him that may not be as much of an issue. They could be setting up Betty Brandt as a future love interest - with her being a freshman or sophomore in this film, a sequel would see her as a senior or fresh graduate and possibly working at the Bugle, with Peter trying to get a job there to be around her more.

I think they got rid of spider sense since half the movie would not be even possible. They are heavily reliant on Peter being an idiot unfortunately. I assume everyone reading these threads has already seen the movie, but just in case spoilers ahead! If Peter had the spider sense Ned would not have found out he was spidey, spidey would have sensed that liz's father was the vulture, aunt may would not have found out he was spidey...etc...

The goal of this film is apparently make peter awkward. So if he was to sense stuff, that would be mostly gone. Also they got Betty Brant in there as a school reporter. So that is the whole news connection I guess. She said she had a date for home coming so not sure how Peter will fare with her as she may have a bf already. Also seems like Michelle will be his next love interest.

Seems like again they sorta made this movie a high school coming of age/comedy/rom-com and spm thrown into the mix. So too much superhero stuff was left out.

Spider Sense isn't omniscience. It's simply a tingling feeling that warns him of incoming danger and allows him to act with split second reflexes. Without the Spider Sense, he wouldn't be able to aim his webshooters so perfectly, fight expertly despite no training in hand-to-hand combat, etc.

I do admit I don't like how many people already know that Peter is Spider-Man (especially when the one person who should be able to piece it together seems completely unaware) but if the sequel follows the 'second film gets darker' trope, something terrible is going to have to happen to make him much more protective of his identity.

reply

Why did Peter constantly refer to "Aunt May" as just "May" throughout the film as well? Last I knew, she was his Aunt. Or I am missing something here?

reply

Some people don't like the be called Aunt or Uncle, I don't make my nieces and nephews call me Uncle MisterE.

reply

True. However, I was just pointing out the fact that Peter addressed her as "Aunt May" in the previous films...but addressed her differently this time around.

reply

I guess it's a reboot so they can choose to do stuff differently... she was a different Aunt May than we're used to.

reply

Fair point. I guess we can't expect the writers to keep everything the same. Otherwise, many in the audience might say something like "I've seen that before."

reply

People kind of said that about Superman Returns. Yet they made Man of Steel and BVS different from the Chris Reeve films and people still complained.

reply

Once Tony took away the AI suit, that should have been the end of it.The AI suit was hindering his Spidey Sense from manifesting. Peter could have went after Toomes and had his spidey sense kick in before the building collapsed on him. Not fully dodging danger he could have been holding up a piece of the building debris like in Civil War.The Vulture could had time to go after the plane and the rest of the end battle could have played out the same. It could have shown Peter working on a suit and then having Aunt May walk in on him at the end. That is just me though. I think that would have set up the sequels to be more of a Spider Man movie than Iron Man.

reply

As important as those are to Spidey's world, I didn't mind their omission. After all, this is Spider-Man in his infancy (so to speak). They can always save them for future films.

reply

The Bugle will almost certainly be an aspect of future films, the hard part is going to be casting Jameson. JK Simmons as Jameson was hands down the greatest casting in CBM history.

reply

Whoever is cast in the role, they most definitely have big shoes to fill.

reply

I trust they won't half ass it.

reply

Uh, after the way they cast Aunt May, MJ, Flash, Liz, etc., you actually think they'll pay any attention to how the characters are supposed to look when it comes to JJJ? They could cast absolutely anyone they want to in the role by their standards. So it'll be an easy job for them.

Personally I wish Phil Hartman were still alive, because I think he would've been a fantastic JJJ.

reply

JJJ first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #1! Spidey's 2nd ever issue. He's hardly something that comes later in the mythos.

The Amazing movies already reduced him to one e-mail on Peter's screen. I guarantee you, this liberal studio does not want to promote the idea that the media are sensationalist purveyors of fake news. It would undermine their greatest political allies and play right into Trump's hands.

reply

LOL I doubt these filmmakers will use the Daily Bugle or JJJ in the form we all know them. They're liberals so they are fully in the camp of the mainstream media. They won't let their movie caricature the media as "fake news," especially in the Trump era. Watching the original Spider-Man, it looks like an allegory with JJJ as CNN and Spider-Man as Trump.

reply

I agree. I don't think we're going to be seeing that aspect of Parker's life on screen at all. No room for it in the Marvel movies. And I don't see them wasting much time in the sequel establishing a double life for Peter. Plus the now hot topic button issue of fake news you mention. And newspapers are dead, so it would be some dumb internet blog site he's working for. That's not fun.

reply

exactly. just like what they did to "MJ".

reply

Going with the Penis Parker, if they included those they would have been renamed as Sperm Sense and Daily Bulge. So, it's better that they had ommited them.
