This film definitely deserves a higher rating. The acting was top notch (one of the best performances I've seen from Glover), the characters were well thought out, the cinematography was excellent and the music complemented everything on screen perfectly. I'm guessing people find it unrealistic? It seems to me that nowadays, whenever a race-related film comes out, a select few get annoyed. People need to start watching movies with an open mind and leave the politics at the door.
I really can't agree, I think 5.5 is being generous really. So much more could have been done with this, and I blame the director for this. First, it was shot on film when it would have looked so much better digital - seriously, who shoots on film anymore? There was no development of Tully, no background, explanation of how he became a supremacist, how he ended up in jail. I researched the actual person that the character was based on and it's really interesting, he actually came from an affluent family and didn't join the AB until going to jail on a robbery rap. His initial sentence was only 3-5 but got extended for stabbing an inmate and a guard, among other things. None of this made it into the movie.
There were all of these flashback scenes that were just pointless. They served no purpose whatsoever other than to act as time filler. The one exception was the flashback when the officer was shot which expounded on the event, but even that was overblown and should have been more succinct and to the point.
The hostage family was also left pretty flat. So many questions were left unanswered that should and could have been explained to the viewer instead of wasting time on useless flashback scenes: Why was Glover's character in prison? For how long? What was his role in the family? Who was the children's father?
The whole movie, while engaging for the story, just left an overall feeling of dissatisfaction, like a meal you ate and still feel un-satiated.

The scene where he robbed the store with the indian clerk was a flashback of the robbery he was put in jail for

As I mention the store-robbery meant to show how he got into jail in the first place... And the scene with him talking about being free made sense to have there as he knew that he had lost his freedom as quickly as he'd got it... A scene that was sorta pointless was the BJ-scene but that was to show how strongly he felt for "the cause" and to bring depth (or lack of depth) of the woman he was with
