The only foreign actor to play American characters and never change his accent

reply

And thats why I love the guy he plays the same character in every movie, he shouldnt even bother changing his characters name in his movies just keep the same name.

reply

bahahahahha yeah

Oh what a day. What a lovely day!

reply

The housekeeper woman in the diner referred to him being British in this film.

Neil: Hey Mike, whats the best thing for a hangover?
Mike: Drinking heavily the night before.

reply

Not sure if Connery played American characters, but he did play a soviet sub captain with a scottish accent...

actually that guy was Lithuanian

reply

When Connery played Americans, it was the kind who left Bonnie Scotland as a little boy!

Its that man again!!

reply

He also played a Spaniard in Highlander, which was SET in Scotland. The lead was played by a Frenchman with his own accent intact as well.

reply

To be fair his character was British in this..

reply

Anthony Hopkins played Zorro

"Mortdecai is an embarrassment for all involved."

reply

beyond Tom Cruise/Leo (They came straaaaeeemin aaaff da booowwaats(man!!)) Di Caprio as Irishmen Hopkins being a Spanishman probably is the most hilarious nationality-juxtaposition role I've.....not that he was bad in it
Oh and probably Connery as a Spaniard in Highlander too!

Hello,Mister sniper sir!!-Riggs

I count six shots n*****!!
I count two guns n*****

reply

If memory serves me, Connery's character, Ramirez, told McLeod that his (Ramirez') mother was Egyptian.

But my vote for all time (Ok, not all time*) worst has to go to Johnny Depp playing Tonto.

* All time worst hast to be John Wayne as Genghis Khan

"Mortdecai is an embarrassment for all involved."

@bohar06-1 Why is it such a stretch for Hopkins to play a Spaniard? I take it you've never been to Spain and wouldn't know a real Spanish person if they were stood in front of you. Hopkins is a brilliant actor who has played people of all nationalities so playing a person from Spain is not a stretch for him at all, you're American aren't you? You probably think all Spaniards look like what you think all Mexicans look like, you'd be wrong on both accounts. Now Connery playing a Spaniard with a Scottish accent was a stretch, that I can agree with.

Most actors relish the opportunity to play a character far different from themselves, the more different the better but Hopkins is of welsh Celtic blood and northern Spain in particular the Basque region is full of people who look similar to Hopkins as the Basque's are Celt's themselves.

You didn't know that did you?

It's better that he doesn't attempt another American accent again, ever. Have you not seen 'The One'?

reply

Hes british in most his films. The even say hes british in this.

reply

One of the first scenes in the movie mentioned it was his 5000th morning in the county. So he grew up elsewhere, they even mention he is British.

reply

Am I the only one who laughs his arse off when I see this accent thing, especially coming from Americans?

reply

I'm not sure, what exactly do you mean?

reply

I mean its funny that only Americans complain/ report about this accent nonsense! But no one else! Well I find American accent terrible to understand (and for my ears too), yet I keep watching Hollywood stuffs, and never once I complained about it or made a post like this! What I don't understand why people outside US will talk in American accent at first place?

reply

Ah okay, I get what you're saying now. And yeah I don't get the hangup on accents either, I guess for people who live outside the USA they get exposed to far more foreign language and accents so its not as noteworthy to them.

reply

Yes, that's another thing, I mean for people who don't live a native English speaking country, like me, I am an Indian and only 10% people here speak in English language, natively. And they speak either in Indian accent or in Welsh (sort of) accent. And that's normal for me, because I am an Indian and I expect Indian accents from Indians. When I was in US I haven't experienced anyone speaking in any accent which was not American, well, again, that's very normal. Statham is British, why on earth would he speak or even think about speaking in American accent is beyond me. I mean he won't, but the problem is why the some people expect that he might, that's quite a baffling thing for me to understand!

Well....

reply

Wow. Talk about dumbing things down.

North American accents are as diverse as they are in the UK.

Do you honestly think people from New Orleans speak the same as people from Houston, Texas?

Open your mind...

(no, I'm not American)

reply

What the heck this has to do with what I said on my actual comment?

Yes, unfortunately I have been to US, quite a lot of time, however I don't have any idea about New Orleans or whatever, but I do know that people from Texas and people from somewhere like New York speak pretty differently, but the main English, I mean the core is same, exactly same. In any case, they both sound terrible to me all the same, be it from western part, or eastern part, or somewhere else.

This is completely irrelevant to this topic anyway! Statham played a British role here, and his accent was British obviously, and as ever some Americans had to create just another accent topic. If there are 100 accent related topics, then all of them are made by Americans, hilarious!

Oh, I don't really care whether you are American or not.

The Stath has had a crack at an American..at best mid-Atlantic..accent ('The One'..'Cellular' and 'War') and they've all been terrible. He should just stick to his Sarf London accent.
