You could make a movie about all sorts of aspects of growing up and they chose “not being a good enough hockey player?

They needed to do a non-offensive generic storyline to maximize profits as much as possible. A bland subject like that will not elicit strong negative reactions from anyone - and that is why it was the right choice.

Kind of like the first movie was "just" about moving across the country?

Not everyone can relate to moving across the country or trying to make a sports team, but these things happen enough in real life that most viewers can relate to overcoming the adversity of these situations.
