That is SPECTACULAR news! I was certain that this series was a gonner, and I had accepted that. I’ve not been able to watch it since episode 7 this year, though I have the balance on DVR. I will binge it. As you probably know, Sherlock Holmes is the most popular character in literary history, and most critics agree that his popularity is due not to his narratives per se, but to how his (fascinating) mind works. I fell in love with Elementary for 3 reasons: (1) Jonny Lee Miller’s personification of Holmes is, to me, the best that I’ve seen: driven, passionate, completely idiosyncratic, tortured, educated, brilliant, disciplined, very difficult to embrace, yet nonetheless a person who is most necessary to our world, (2) Lucy Lieu as Dr. Joan Watson, who was not the bumbling ass that Watson was in the Basil Rathbone films, but was instead a fulsome, gifted M. D. with a huge heart and a laser-sharp perception that at times equaled and even surpassed Holmes’. There is an old saying: The greatest honor that a student can give her teacher is to surpass her teacher. (3) To me, there are two crucial Holmes quotations in the Holmes canon. This series nailed them both. The first one came in Season 1. Watson gives some information to Holmes. The series diverges from the Conan Doyle stories, so I shall reference the series. Holmes replies, and this is probably a paraphrase “Attic theory! Watson, most men keep their minds like attics. They throw everything up there, and then they can’t find anything. That is why I shall do my best to forget what you just told me.” The other quote, from Conan Doyle’s Holmes, and the title of what I am glad to learn was NOT the series finale: “Once we eliminate the impossible, the improbable, no matter how absurd, must be the answer.”
Sherlock Holmes fucking ROCKS!
PS Not for nothing, but this is the only broadcast network series that I will watch.
