Overall, quite happy.

Romero died too easily. After years as a cop, then in prison, I feel like he wouldn't have let his guard down, he would've immediately been smart enough to keep Norma's body between them. Saw it coming a mile away. That just means it was in service of killing him. Heck, would've even been happier if it turned out that Norman had buried a weapon with her as a surprise advantage in case of such an event. Regardless, obvious Romero would die, he was on a suicide mission. And what an outstanding sequence, and beautiful location, morbidity aside. Really, I think the whole episode was shot beautifully.

Odd that the sheriff sent people to check the residences, yet no one was there when Norman returned home. They'd have it staked out until he was caught. Also, given his lifestyle, surprising that Dylan would still have the same phone number now that he did at the beginning of the series. Seems like he'd have gone through dozens of burners. Then again, maybe he kept it the same, knowing it would at some point be the only way his family knew to reach him.

Generally could've done with maybe one more death, though not sure who.

Wish they would've shown the sheriff, at some point this season, driving and singing to "American Girl."

Was hoping Maggie would regain the motel at the end (her family had it before Norma, her brother is the ass from the pilot episode).

Really liked how they looped back around to the conversation on their move-in day. Now, re-watching episodes will have a different feel, knowing the ultimate fates of the characters.

Wish they would've touched more on Dr. Edwards than just the vague "missing for a year, presumed dead" remarks. I guess we have enough to fill in the blanks, as they wouldn't have mentioned it if we weren't supposed to deduce it, and guessing is part of the fun (same showrunner from Lost after all). Though ultimately, though I didn't love the character, in death, I think the saddest is Bradley. Thought dead a while beforehand, and no one will ever know the truth, except maybe Dylan if he gives it enough thought, which I doubt. I read someone else on here commented that the final shot could be of them finding her car, like the end of the movie, that could've been cool. Though I did like the final shot, very symbolic of how much of himself Norman poured into "Mother." What else I think is sad though about Bradley, if they ever find her body, given long-term submersion especially, they'll probably just assume she was killed by her father's rivals. And they're all dead or gone, so no way to verify.

The whole series could be re-titled "Poor Dylan." Funny Norman used that phrase. Though morbid, I bet him killing Norman helped him and Emma heal, because what more could she want from him? Though I wish they'd shown her pregnant, just to show their marriage was still warm. But I think it was. Just so happy both of them survived and can live in the light now, five years of breath-holding paid off.

Cool how the dining room scene took the place of the cellar scene. And that we got the shot of Norman carrying her down the stairs. But, wish we would've gotten the Arbogast death, and the shot of Lila and the light, which I suspected would go to Madeleine (who was absent from the episode but oh well).

So yeah, some nitpicks, but I'm happy, it's on the better end of finales in my mind. And so glad that the writers were allowed to do their five-year plan as the envisioned it.

While I loved this finale, the ineptitude of the police department in this episode was SO jarring. Every time it cut to the commercials, I kept saying out loud "These cops suck at their jobs". Romero's death, I knew was coming, but I think Romero has gone off the deep end to be in full concentration after seeing Norma's corpse.

I have to ask, was anyone else worried the ending would go along the route of Dylan winding up becoming "Norman", and take over the Motel? I kept hearing people who watch the show debate that this would happen, but I'm ultimately glad it didn't go that route. Although, it sucks Dylan will never know what happened to Caleb.

Also, apparently Jiao is still alive.

reply

What makes you say that about Jiao? Just assuming because we haven't seen her in a long time? Or did they touch on that and I missed it?

reply

Didn't A & E have like a blog for Emma on their website in the first season, and she confirms Shelby shot Jiao dead?

reply

No idea, I don't recall that, but I wouldn't be one to know, I usually don't bother with side things like that.

Edit/add: Just looked her up, on Bates Motel wiki, and it says that she's the realtor in the finale, and so Shelby lied.

This is strange. Hard to figure why Shelby would lie. Sure, it would stop others from actively seeking her, but they still might have looked for her body, plus, it was at the expense of willingly adding a murder to his rap sheet. Also, that's a very illogical thing for Jiao to do, why on earth would anyone pursue a career and life in the area that they only knew as where they were a sex slave.

I had some of the same nitpicks. I was talking to my TV saying "don't turn your back on him, Alex!
because you know you can see that Michael Myers ending coming a mile off. You think they are dead or unconscious but then they get up and kill you.

I was even thinking that maybe Norman would get off, since Alex was dead he could pin ALL the murders on Alex. Chick's murder was already easily tied to Alex, so maybe they'd be able to blame him for the others and Norman would get off. But That would have taken up a whole nother episode.
I would have liked some closure about Dr. edwards too.

Biggest thing missing was an Arbogast stand-in and the fall down the stairs. To me that is equally iconic as the shower murder.

reply

I don't think Norman could've pinned all the murders Alex. He could've tried, and the story might've held for a slight amount of time, but it would've broke.

Blackwell went missing before Romero escaped, and they were friends. Presumably, they could've been hiding out together, and gotten in a fight, in which Romero killed him. But, that would make it even more questionable that Romero had directed Blackwell toward his stepson that he didn't get along with. And I can't imagine what kind of motive he'd have for killing Emma's mom, other than maybe at random. And Sam Loomis? Unless we're supposed to believe he was just lurking around the motel to murder a random. I guess to frame Norman.

The story could've been believed at first, but they'd still investigate, and figure out the truth, I think.

I felt the same way about the finale episode as I did about the whole of season 5: it was unremarkable.

I think the show peaked with seasons 3 and 4. Those were the best, imo.

reply

Hmm, odd how things strike people differently. As a whole, I loved Season 5. And while the whole show was great, and I definitely enjoyed Seasons 2 and 3 as well, they were probably my least favorite, due to the over-focus on the marijuana business and call girl murders.

Overall, I loved the finale. I think they wrapped up the story and the characters storylines perfectly. I know people didn't want Norman to die but there really wasn't any other option for him. I loved how Norman gave Dylan an out with self defense. He wasn't going to hurt Dylan but if he came at him with the knife, Dylan could kill him and let Norman be with mother for forever. And Dylan could take self defense and live a long, happy life with his family. So sad it's come to an end. 😔

reply

Which Dylan deserved. He managed to create a successful life for himself and his family, overcoming a very turbulent past, accompanied by enormous personal baggage. He was always a problem solver, a take charge kind of guy. And he always had a lot of heart. It would have been truly tragic if he had died instead.

reply

Agreed! I'm happy how it ended. :)

Always nice to encounter someone with a similar perspective.

I was disappointed with everything about this finale.

1.Romero was killed too easily.
2. Why no cops staking out the Bates home?
3. MY BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT -Bait and switch with one scene in the preview with Norman breaking the fourth wall, as in the movie "Psycho" then NOT getting that ending. Yes, Norman and Norma are united but I really wanted the movie ending.

Overall, it was an astounding series, and Vera and Freddie are amazingly talented. I also love Max and Olivia, glad they made it as a couple.

reply

1. At first I thought the same thing but then I could see the despair in his eyes seeing Norma again, 2 years later so I excused it as he was consumed by Norma and perhaps forgot Norman was right there.

2. This bothered me a lot especially since Sheriff Green was specific about staking out his home.

3. "the preview with Norman breaking the fourth wall, as in the movie, Psycho"....I don't know if I understand what you mean here. Could you please explain?

I would have rather Norman lived even though I adored the scene with him being reunited with Norma, which we would not have gotten had he lived. It also meant that they couldn't revive the show without Norman around. So I still have mixed emotions about this. I felt a little bit at peace with the ending only because Norman said "thank you" to Dylan as he was finally going to be relieved of his illness along with being reunited with Norma.

I still would have liked to have seen his funeral and to hear what Dylan had to say. And it really bothers me that Dylan didn't have any words to add to Norman's side of the tombstone. Even if he had just written "devoted son."
I also thought it would have been a nice touch if when we saw Dylan, Emma and their now older daughter showing up to their grave and putting fresh flowers on it.
I did not like seeing new people looking to buy Bates Motel. I would have rather Dylan and Emma ran the motel after.

It would be nice if they created alternate endings for this show on the DVD.

reply

Never really thought of that before, but very true, I can see how Romero would've zoned out right before Norman killing him, finding Norma like that, must've been very intense.
