I always assumed that they spent quite a good deal traveling (weeks or even months), we just didn't see it.
if I remember correctly, I think it was a 11 month journey to Mordor.
shareYes, but Gandalf crisscrosses Middle Earth on various errands during this time, only to arrive in Mordor at the same time as Frodo and Sam. Also, Saruman’s army marches from Isengard to Helm’s Deep in what seems like mere days.
