6.3 Rating?? That's actually ridiculous
I'm really disappointed so many people on here can't enjoy this.

shareIt's simply a bore.
First half was great, it was funny and the songs were great and the sense of ticking clock was there.
But after the giant comes down, I regretted asking myself "So what happened to that other beanstalk?" a few seconds earlier.
Then the characters started to write themselves out of the film and wow that ending.
So downbeat, so contrived.
The ending is contrived?!!
Far from it! It ends with fairy tales having to face real world consequences for their actions and it analyzes moral issues. If they give Jack to the giant, Jack dies and that's barbaric. If they don't, their world gets destroyed. But it's Jack who created the whole situation they're in. By the end these characters aren't seen as fairy tales anymore but normal people going through a crisis. It's a deconstruction and anything but contrived.
I dislike it for most of the reasons 'normal' people do but also, I'm a musician who has played this show many times. And the more I encounter it the less I enjoy it.
There is something about a LOT of Sondheim's stuff that just feels like being on a psychotherapist's couch. A lot of it is too 'clever' for my taste. And I know it's supposed to be 'layered' and 'deep' but I get sick of the fact that the characters are all so imperfect and a 'happy ending' is basically... "well, we'll make the best of it!"
I don't have to leave home to get that. :D
I'm also a big opera fan and I think of this a real step down... too pretentious to be a good ol' fashion musical but not nowhere near real music drama.
Oh and final 'insult'... I think Les Miz is a much better -show-. :D
Sorry. Some of the songs of ITW are great, but overall the music, the drama, just don't grab me.
Now... add to all that the fact that this version just ain't that hot as a -movie-? (Disney and Sondheim? Not a great blend.)
You're upset because you LOOOOOVE the show. Fair enough.
But seen through the eyes of the avg. movie-goer? Musical lover or not? Yeah, 6.3 seems about right.
I enjoyed Blunt and Streep (especially her "Last Midnight"-song)...but else.
This Jack was so annoying you couldn't help yourself to root for the giants.

I enjoyed it. I gave it a 6. If I didn't enjoy it, I would've rated it below 5... 5 is average; I marked above average, just apparently not high enough for your liking... Oh well.
"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"
Even you struggled with it the first time, remember?

As a fan of the show I was very pleased with how this adaptation turned out; it does an outstanding job of translating the musical to the screen and the performances are all very well done. I do feel the second act was rushed in this film but it was still presented effectively. I give it a 9/10.
As for the songs: Sondheim's style is very, very esoteric. But he's a genius at what he does. I couldn't disagree more with those who dislike the songs in this movie. Although again that might be part of my own familiarity with them. But I can't imagine the show without them.
It's down to 6.0 now and in free fall. A yawn fest!🐭
