Josh Brolin or Gerard Butler.

Gerard Butler is perfect for this role. He actually looks like Joel.

damn i never even thought of gerard butler, I always was on the Josh Brolin train, but butler could be really awesome as Joel if the movie ever gets made

As much as I love Viggo I feel as if he has already tread this ground with the road and would not like to see him do something similar again. For me either Hugh Jackman or Josh Brolin

Viggo is a better actor than all mentioned above, but he already played this role on "The Road (2009)", so i would go for Hugh Jackman or Butler.

My first choice would be Gerard Butler.

But Russell Crowe or Hugh Jackman would work if Butler isn't available.

They are both exceptionally talented actors who could do the role of Joel justice. However, I am sticking with Robert Downey Jr.
