I cried. Did you?

This movie brought up memmories of my carefree childhood. I cried to learn my association with the happiest of my childhood is built upon the sadness of the author's pitiful life.

reply

Yes, at least four times. When Walt talks about his childhood and how tired he is of remembering it that way. When her father dies. When Travers hands Ralph the list of people who have overcome difficulties in life and says that his daughter can be anyone she wants to be. When she's at the premier and Dick Van Dykes character is speaking about the father. I wasn't bawling but definitely felt those tears streaming.

Why would a banana grab another banana?I mean those are the kind of questions I don't want to answer.

reply

Yeah, I cried. I had to kinda pull myself together.

The pain and heartache P.L. endured with her beloved father dying (and in such an agonizing way!) must've been quietly excruciating for her. I lost my own dad around her age, so I really related and connected to what her character was going through in a very personal way. Colin Farrell gave an absolutely mesmerizing, heartbreaking performance...he deserves an Oscar. He made me truly feel for this man.

My brother and I would go swimming almost every day during the summer as kids, then come inside and watch Mary Poppins. This movie really got to me, mostly because a movie I loved and enjoyed so much was born out of such sadness. So many things made me tear up but when the "let's go fly a kite" scene happened, I lost it! This was a such a touching story and brought back so many wonderful memories for me.

Several times! My mom used to call me Hard-Hearted Hannah because I never cried at movies. This one got to me.
1) when they showed Disneyland. I used to go several times a year and even worked there in my early 20s, but I haven't been to Disneyland in several years and the shot of Walt in front of the flower Mickey at the main gate made me cry.
2) when Travers finally breaks down and dances with the songwriting team.
3) when Travers's father...well, you know.
4) a couple of other times that others have mentioned.

Great movie! I hope it wins a TON of Oscars!

reply

You know it's only nominated for one Oscar, right?

reply

I just looked and yes, now I know. I meant to update my original comment, but you beat me to it! ;)

The Academy must be stupid this year.

reply

I think so.

reply

YES!! i cried many times.

reply

Just saw it tonight, I wanted to cry but in my mind I was like "keep it together man." What a wonderful movie and one of 2013's best pictures.

reply

I didn't cry, but I got a lump in my throat when Travers cried.

reply

Several times, yes.

I learned to recognise the thorough and primitive duality of man.

Walt Disney's speech at her home really got to me--about why we create works of art to begin with. It what the whole industry is about.

reply

Half the theatre was quietly sobbing in the premiere scene when Travers cried at the sight of 'let's go fly a kite'.
