Do people really smoke in movie theaters in USA?

I don't care if this kind of film isn't believable, but there should be some logic. So is it common for people just starting to smoke in the movies? The rest of the audience seemed to be okay with it, too.

reply

No. I've spent time on both coasts and lived in the Midwest. Movie theatres do no permit smoking, essentially ever. If you did find one, it'd probably be a fancy dinner theatre costing $100+. I imagine smoking in theatres was more common in the 70's and perhaps part of the eighties, when people became more keen on it causes damage to buildings in addition to the obvious health concerns.

The only time smoking has happened in a theatre I've been in was during a play, and even then only the actors could smoke. It was considered an essential character prop and included signs outside the entrance letting people know there would be smoking in the performance.

I should add, I'm not sure how business will respond to smoking with a vape pen in the long run. Sometimes they're given more slack.

Do people really ask dumb ass questions like this, no it doesnt happen, I have been going to movies for 25 years and no one has ever lit up in a PUBLIC movie theatre...(dinner and a movie joints had different laws till Americans got conned into believing the propaganda behind "2nd hand smoke").

America is not a free nation anymore, like most Western Cultures, it is drunk with to many laws as they fall all overthemselves to "grease the squeaky wheels", who are usually in the minority.

Second hand smoke as a health problem is one of the biggest frauds being perpertrated right now. The science behind it is based on flawed studies that had a specific, facist agenda, eliminate any and all smoking.

It makes sense that it wouldn't be good for you to inhale that smoke. Where is the proof for it not being harmful?

When your mind breaks the spirit of your soul.

reply

Maybe there's no proof of the effects of second hand smoke one way or the other, but why should non-smokers have to be subjected to having to smell like an astray. Not to mention some people like me who get nauseous around it and it also makes my eyes sting.
And I really can't imagine how inhaling second hand smoke could not be harmful.
Besides, no one is stopping you from smoking in your own house.

It's not like this audience showed up for the premiere of the latest Hollywood blockbuster, it was a rowdy, drunken midnight movie crowd. It isn't unusual for someone to light up a joint or cigarette at that type of screening even though it's technically not permitted. I would guess that most theaters had gone non-smoking by the time the fictional Camp Bloodbath was originally released (I recall people being allowed to smoke in a theater as late as the early '80s).

The only real lack of logic in the scene was that a cigarette would ignite that blaze - it would've sizzled out as soon as it was wet by the booze. Years ago, I was a manager at a convenience store and with all the butts that I swept up from around the gas pumps, I know there would've been hundreds of catastrophic explosions if that was remotely plausible.

reply

Thank you Vinnie! Finally someone answers the question. I was going to say what you said but you took the words out of my mouth. No smoking is not allowed in US theaters but at "festivals" and "midnight movies" drugs, sex, and booze are often around especially since that theater looked kind of beat up to begin with.

reply

I have never been in a movie theatre where somebody smoked.

reply

No, it's illegal to smoke in any indoor public spot actually. At least where I'm from (Oregon and California). Might be a state thing though, not sure.

reply

No, it isn't common in 2015....all the way up through the 80's, and even 90s, as long as it was an adult feature. Basically with smoking mentality and legality, we stay about 15-20 years behind our European counterparts.

reply

Even less common for something without a spark to ignite that booze.

We've met before, haven't we?

reply

No. Aside from annoying the other patrons (and endangering their health), it would ruin the seats.
