The heyday of slasher films were 1979-1982 or so. In the beginning, Akerman tosses it off as a movie that she made twenty years ago which would have made it around 1992 (as the action then goes forward three years.) Then we're told the movie is set in 1986 but from the music and the hairstyles, "Camp Bloodbath" looks like it should have been set in 1981.
Well Malin herself may have been too young but it doesn't mean she can't play a fictional character with that back story. Not everything needs to be accurate and to me she looked fine in the role.
Didn't one of the characters say it was the 20th anniversary of the movie being made, making the present day of the movie 2006? That might be a holdover from when the original script was written, seeing as everyone has current day iphones, etc... but it would make sense with Malin being 37, so 20 years earlier she'd be 17...
Actually, it makes perfect sense to me, and here is why (to get technical and all)...
Camp Bloodbath was supposed to be filmed and take place in 1986, which was still a good year for slasher flicks.. If you think about it, it takes quite some time to film a movie, and by the time the movie reached theaters, it was probably (supposedly) 1987. Twenty years later, is 2007 and that's when her mom would have died in the beginning. When Max and her friends go to the screening of Camp Bloodbath, that's supposed to be on the 3 year anniversary of her mom's death; which would make it 2010. And yes, they did have iphones with them, but the first generation iphone was available as early as 2007. But being 2009 or 2010, I'm sure their phone's aren't too terribly old.. :) So there you have it!
