Scariest movie that you've seen?

Ok, I liked this movie. It had some pretty creepy parts despite some bad acting/writing... but it got me to wondering, what do other people consider the scariest movie they've ever seen? I really want something SCARY..that'll keep you up at night... so tired of watching semi-scary movies that you forget as soon as the lights are out. Just looking for some good, recently made horror movies..like in the past 10-15 years... because I've seen a lot of old stuff and that stuff is great. Any recommendations?

Personally I dig Rosemary's Baby...The Exorcist... Halloween.....Texas Chainsaw Massacre... the stuff that has scared me the most unfortunately hasn't been straight horror movies (the T-1000 in Terminator 2, Predator, Alien, Martyrs...) so I'm kinda wondering where all the good, recent horror is at?

I would recommend 'Lake Mungo'

reply

Agreed, Lake Mungo is amazingly creepy.
The last 1/4 of Silent House was terrible, but the first 1/2 was really scary to me.

reply

I liked Lake Mungo too

reply

Check out 'I am a Ghost'. The first two Rec movies are pretty scary too.

reply

Audition is very scary.

That movie freaking sucked hard.

Check out Lake Mungo and Session 9 for sure. THey are both amazingly creepy. Will mess with your head, so be prepared.

ALso, I would highly recommend some classics like The Haunting (1963) and The Innocents. The last 10 minutes of The Innocents is genuinely frightening, despite it being from the 1960s.

Horror is such a wide genre now, because there are so many sub genres. Honestly, you'd almost have to narrow it down by sub genre.

For psycho killer realistic stuff try Wolf Creek

For paranormal ghostly stuff try the ones I mentioned above.

Martyrs is one the scariest I've seen, but because of the redeeming qualities it has its almost not relentless enough to be the scariest. Session 9 is more a twisted thriller. There is one okay scare seen, but honestly that movie was forgettable to me so it can't honestly be that scary. Halloween honestly terrified me growing up, as well as child's play but they weren't in the last 15 years. The new Amityville Horror with Ryan Reynolds was pretty dang good and scary.

John Carpenter's "The Thing" still holds the record for me. Close runner-ups are:

Paranormal Activity
Insidious
The Hills Have Eyes (remake)
The Descent
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)
Wolf Creek

man I love horror

Yes, the Thing is the undisputed king, IMHO. With a close runner up to the Shinning followed by the Exorcist and then Rosemary's Baby.

I agree with the Blair Witch Project. I think because it was one of the original found footage movies that at the time, made you wonder if it was real or not - I always thought the acting was impressive too.

It doesnt have a good rating on IMDB for some reason, but I really liked The Possession Of David O'Reilly.

The Strangers
Insidious
Paranormal Activity
Blair Witch Project

all freaked me out when i first saw them. The Strangers STILL gives me nightmares sometimes.. the thought of someone being in your house without you knowing is horrifying to me.

The trailer for the new movie Sinister freaked the hell out of me... i look forward to seeing that.

Aside from your average horror movies. Megan is Missing creeped me out quite a bit also.. not exactly a horror movie but the creepiness of child abductions really made that movie terrifying for me.

I find this a really interesting question because it really comes down to how each person defines "Scary". I like a lot of modern day Horror fans have become desensitized to to "scary" but are still prime to be frightened.

For me personally if a film can operate with a constant underlying "Oh sh*t what is going to happen next" then that is what tends to keep me on the edge of my seat so movies like The Thing where you are constantly wondering who is an alien are quite scary.

The Blair witch project because it was a bit more realistic was quite scary for me when i saw it as a child.

Martyrs is disturbing and so is Inside (first time ive looked away from a movie :P)

Rec is also very good at building tension but this is common with handy cam films because you can never get a full sense of what is happening around a person.

So yeah I guess its each to their own when it comes to what is scary.

Normally, I don't judge horror films on how scary they are. But if you are looking for something scary. I would recommend The Others which I believe you have already watched before. In that case, I would recommend Grave Encounters, Creep, The Locals, Eden Lake, The Pact, Mirrors.

I like how you think with the others, eden lake and grave encounters, grave encounters wasn't that scary just really good the way it was planned out, and the others and eden lake weren't that scary, just really good films. Will try the pact, creep and locals :)

thanks, I believe you will like them :)

I agree- "scary" can apply to so many things, which is why there are so many sub-genres. (The relatively tame and neutral autopsy in the otherwise not-at-all scary Saw IV gave a lot of people the squirms.)

If you're looking for disturbing, but not to the level that it relies on torture porn to carry the movie, it's The Poughkeepsie Tapes.

Slasher is The Strangers (so many strong images and moments in that movie- it still ranks as my favorite theatre opening night experience.) And an HM to the original NOES- though I'd say that's more supernatural horror.

For supernatural *terror it's Paranormal Activity (I personally didn't get much out of it, but the people around me flipped out over the slightest things- it just hd the audience by the balls.) Rosemary's Baby gets a nod here too.

For gore it's Hellraiser.

For overall mood and tone, it goes back to the 70s TCSM

But the one that takes the cake in the "monster" category is the one I find the most interesting.. It wasn't even meant to be a scary movie, but Arachnophobia still scares the living S**T out of people, because it's so simple, so effective, and it plays on one of the most fundamental fears of humanity.

I know why God gave women mouths, Mr. Peepers, but I'm not sure why they also got vocal chords.

The Poughkeepsie Tapes was a horrible movie, which was uber disappointing after hearing such good things about it.
