Susan Sarandon Miscast: Who Would Have Been Better for the Role?

I love Susan Sarandon, but as a well preserved 60 something I had a lot of trouble buying her as Melissa McCarthy's grandmother. I know they originally wanted to go with Shirley MacLaine. When that didn't work they tried to get Debbie Reynolds. Obviously when that didn't work they thought of Susan Sarandon.

But I keep thinking, who else they could have given the role to? Someone who is at least 75, and could convincingly be 43 year old Melissa McCarthy's grandmother? Someone with a background in comedy, and playing old, crochety characters. Carol Burnett would have been perfect, and probably would have had better chemistry with Melissa McCarthy. Betty White also could have done it!

I agree

I have no plans of seeing this film but I would submit Oscar nominated actress Gena Rowlands as a possible candidate.

Just saw it - Cloris Leachman would have been perfect! Sarandon is just too young.

reply

Cloris Leachman at 88 would not have been able to do most of what was involved in this movie.

reply

I think Susan Sarandon would have been better off playing the mother role.

reply

I don't think she was miscast I think the characters just were written badly. The era of old people being crazy, using profanity and acting skanky are starting to get old in films and here it wasn't written good.

Piper Laurie

This is a role where I didn't see Ms. Sarandon. I enjoyed her.

I think the writer was miscast. Crap movie. Grandmother is 68 in real life - mother (Janney) is 55. Really?!

reply

Sarandon was the third ohoice, with more age apporpriate actress intended for the role. Shirley MacLaine (36 years older tham McCarthy) was originally cast, but had to drop out. DEbie Reynolds (38 years older) was also considered. After they got Sarandon, why not just chnage it a little bit, and say Sarandon (24 years older) is her mother and Allison Janney (11 years older) is her sister?

That being said, that wouldn't have saved this stinker of a movie.
