Susan Sarandon Miscast: Who Would Have Been Better for the Role?

I love Susan Sarandon, but as a well preserved 60 something I had a lot of trouble buying her as Melissa McCarthy's grandmother. I know they originally wanted to go with Shirley MacLaine. When that didn't work they tried to get Debbie Reynolds. Obviously when that didn't work they thought of Susan Sarandon.

But I keep thinking, who else they could have given the role to? Someone who is at least 75, and could convincingly be 43 year old Melissa McCarthy's grandmother? Someone with a background in comedy, and playing old, crochety characters. Carol Burnett would have been perfect, and probably would have had better chemistry with Melissa McCarthy. Betty White also could have done it!

reply

I won't see this because of Sarandon, I can't stand her I find her to be such a phony elitist. That aside, my choice would have been Sophia Loren. For some reason I can see the pairing of the two. Betty White is about old enough now play her great grandmother. I think Debbie Reynolds, had it worked out would have been the best choice however.

Betty White is about old enough now play her great grandmother.

Betty White would've been 48 when she was born so she could actually do it so I vote for her-I mean I know you could technically be a great grandmother at that age but that would really only be the case if either you had a child at a young age or their child had a child at a young age. I'm pretty sure it's rare to be a great grandmother at 48-hell, I'm pretty sure a large majority of women that age also have children that are still teenagers!

Also maybe Elaine Stritch.

Also, just out of curiosity, why are people on this board picking women that would've been in their 30's when Melissa was born to play her grandmother?

I call movies that are considered 'bad' hated movies.

I thought I'd misread the Betty White for G Grandmother comment at first until I read your comment, which I really, really appreciated reading. OMG. I'm 49 and my son is 17, and that's me in my picture--I cannot imagine being a great grandmother at my age. Not that it's not possible--it's just not really very common, lol. My mother and brother are the same ages as Melissa and Susan, and my mom was barely 24 when she had my brother, so I don't understand putting Susan in this role any more than I understood putting Meryl Streep in the Mamma Mia role (it's one of my top worst movies, but that casting just didn't make any sense at all either).

reply

yeah I wish it was Debbie Reynolds or why not Gena Rowland - she is a kickass actress who I think the producers or whoever the *beep* does the casting. Gena Rowland's is such a versatile actress who would've pulled of this role that landed on Susan Sarandon's lap; I like Sarandon as an actress, but she is all wrong. So why didn't they really look into actresses who could've pulled this role off.... dah dah dah - Gena Rowland's who is still one of the best actresses out there - even Sandra Bullock has so much respect for this great actress and was honored to work w/her as well! So I think "making Sarandon older looking" was a load of crap. Again the CASTING DEPARTMENT did NOT look harder enough. Yeah Hope Floats was criticized horribly by the critics but I loved the movie, and Gena Rowland's just happens to be one of my favorite actresses (from way back; she's just so talented as an actress)and she wasn't even considered; damn I think Melissa and Gena would've had awesome chemistry, especially since Rowland's would've knocked it out the park w/b/c she's such a versatile actress who could've pulled it off! Sorry for the rambling just think Sarandon was wrong for the part even though I always thought she was a very good actress - she was just plain- damn- wrong for this movie.

Right wing nut job alert!

Calling somebody who does not vote GOP "elitist" was the stock in trade of that old crook Spiro Agnew.

Maybe Cloris Leachman?

reply

Meryl Streep

Cloris would have been perfect!!! I loved her on Malcolm In The Middle. I think maybe Jane Curtin, Carol Burnett, Florence Henderson, Doris Roberts, or even Penny Marshall would've been a more convincing grandmother. Susan is too young-looking.

Susan Sarandon was HORRIBLY miscast for Tammy (skip it-no joke), however at this stage in her career Susan would be perfect for grandmother or voice-over type work. She's 68, has an Oscar. I don't think she cares what we little people think of her being miscast in another foul-mouthed Melissa McCarthy movie. This movie was such a let down. I should have begged he manager for my $12.50 back. Don't see this film, unless you enjoy watching the same joke over and over plus hearing the f bomb every 2 seconds. It's official now: American cinema has gone to the dogs. This post was posted right before I saw this. I need to check this site more often if I'm ever going to burn a $20 bill again before going to the movies. Time for Netflix and/or Amazon. Which is better?

@JEyler

Oh,please----Sarandon was fun as heck to watch in this role---she made it her own. I don't think she was miscast for it at all.

reply

I was thinking how Cloris Leachman would have been better as I watched Tammy. She would have played that role perfectly and probably won a comedy award or two. Remember her as the Grandma in Malcolm in The Middle? She would have owned this.

reply

Oh yes Cloris would have been great

You pretty much named all of the good actresses who could've done it - MacLaine, Reynolds, Burnett, and White, although if any of them did this movie it would've been a dark spot on their otherwise stellar careers, so good thing none of them did it if they were asked. I think Angie Dickinson, Gena Rowlands, or Connie Stevens would've been good, although none are as famous as Sarandon now is, and I'm sure that's why they ultimately went with her. In spite of the age difference clearly not working (and I'm sure they knew this) they wanted her name for box office. None of the other actresses who are older than Sarandon and more appropriate for the role (even major ones like Burnett and MacLaine) have the kind of box office draw that Sarandon does. It's because she's younger that more people know who she is, and would thereby go to the movie to see her. Some people might be going to see Sarandon more than McCarthy...

Melissa McCarthy is mid 40s, Betty White is like 90. I don't know in what world you are living in, but in mine, a generation is about 20 years apart, so Betty could play her grandmother in a real life situation, and not in the *beep* up world where teenagers have multiple babies by the time they hit 20.

Agree Susan was miscast. If they were going with her, it would have been more believable if it was rewritten to be her mother or aunt, and Janney changed to Melissa's older sister. Susan is a great actress, but I don't think she is all that funny.

Reynolds really would have been the best I think, but Leachman and Penny Marshall are great suggestions. I know she has serious health issues right now, but I could see Valerie Harper in the role. She is in her 70s and can play feisty.

I got the feeling the Tammy character was supposed to be about 30.

OH THANK YOU GOD! THANK YOU SO BLOODY MUCH!!! Basil Fawlty

there are 15 year olds having babies everyday and the character is sexually active having been a rock band groupie. (SS played a groupie in The Banger Sisters so maybe this is that character aged) so it's not inconceivable.

reply

that means nothing to this. and I know it is not inconceivable but most children of teenage parents do not grow up to make much of themselves.

and you can't equate what happens in third world countries as the norm for ALL of the world.

most families who have a pregnant teenager above the age of 17 are embarrassed at their situation.
