Too many loose ends ... here's my list of top 20

1. Who was the father of Tui's child?
2. Was Matt really Robin's father or was he just bluffing?
3. Who was Robin's fiance of 5 years?
4. Why did Matt kill Bob but didn't take the land back from a bunch of old ladies?
5. Why did Tui decide to go to the woods to give birth? (very freak idea for a 12-year old)
6. Where did Tui's mother vanish?
7. What was the issue between Johnno and his father?
8. Why weren't Robin's rapists caught?
9. Why didn't Robin make any attempt to catch her rapists - even though she was a police officer?
10. Why was Robin sacked by Al for a petty brawl?
11. Why wasn't GJ able to solve the problem of any of the women?
12. Why was GJ heading to the bushes when she said she was leaving?
13. What was Al running in his basement? child pornography or child sex trafficking?
14. Did Al die?
15. Did Al rape Robin, or take advantage of her when she passed out in his house?
16. Why did Al take the keys out of her pocket when Robin passed out in his house?
17. What was the purpose of inserting that Pathologist's character when none of his cases were solved - or we didn't see any headway or link with the original story or characters?
18. Who really hanged Zanic?
19. Did Al manipulate the DNA test results in the end?
20. Is New Zealand really that beautiful?

reply

As to 19 they never resolved that. It was obviously one of the pedophiles since she didn't remember and the sheriff could have changed the results. Too many loose ends unresolved.

I spent 7 months in New Zealand and I can confirm it's easily that beautiful. I'd actually say for New Zealand that location was nothing special.

OMG!

My advice? Rewatch the whole damn thing!

People who don't like their beliefs being laughed at shouldn't have such funny beliefs

Classic!

Wow. Almost everyone of those twenty questions could be answered if you just paid attention and/or exercised a little common sense. Honestly I'm embarrassed for you.

__________
Everybody needs love. Have you held your hostage today?

reply

That's what I thought. I never felt like there was no resolution; it seemed clear to me. I think perhaps people missed details, and others are over thinking it. Terrific show, done really well!

Amen to that.

reply

I agree, everything was answered by paying attention to the series or using common sense. Are people so dense?

reply

Yeah, I'm not sure we were watching the same show, because all of these things were answered, or at least appeared to be answered by the final episode.

Just a not though. A few people have suggested that the Pahtologist was inconsequential, but remember the girl who died was also a barista graduate. The mention of drugs in her genitals strengthens the pedo/sex trafficking storyline in Al's basement and Matt's drug operations, especially since the kids in the last scene were the most recent group of "grads".

reply

Loose ends? Most of these are not that important (3, 14, 7, 6) and the rest are answered if you were paying attention.

reply

20. Yes, yes it is. Might be a small country, but New Zealand IS really beautiful!

reply

Matt was Robin's father he wasn't Johnno's dad.

proof?

reply

Every time I see a movie or TV show filmed in NZ, I'm blown away by the landscape. Actually travelling there would probably put me in a coma!

reply

All of your questions are legitimate, and anyone who claims that the answers are obvious has nothing more than opinions about what they THINK the answers are.

reply

Or else just paying attention.

reply

gawestgate, hate to break it to you mate but you have to listen to the dialogue and pay attention to what is being shown on the screen. Yeah I know concentrating on a show and having an attention span of more than 5 minutes, what the hell was Jane Campion thinking!

I'm only just completed episode four, the imdb storyline for each episode is screwed btw, and half the questions raised in the original post as loose ends have been answered by the show.

Having been to the areas the show is shot in I can confirm it is that dramatic and isolated, though Queenstown rocks on a Friday evening :)

Really wish Oz would punch out some drama as good as this, come on ABC!

The problem is the dialogue is awful. It isn't a matter of 'understanding' it or not understanding it. The problem is it's terribly written and mostly nonsensical. The story is so thin and has been stretched out to fill a ridiculously over long series which of course means the hideously amateurish writing is even more obvious than it might have been had it been confined to a television movie.

It is hard to concentrate when the story is so weak and the writing so awful.

About the money is my guess.

Top of the Lake is rubbish.

reply

Well, many of what you call "loose ends" were clearly mentioned in the series, so either you weren't paying much attention or you didn't watch all seven episodes.

1.) In the last episode, Al got the DNA results back and was sickened by his new knowledge of Matt Mitcham actually being the father of Tui's baby.
2.) This wasn't really mentioned exactly, but my guess is that it was just a trick to confuse her and only anger Robin, so most likely, he isn't her father.
3.) Her fiance wasn't important.
4.) Matt's a sick man.
5.) Tui's afraid of her father. Notice how she pointed a gun at him but didn't shoot because she was afraid.
6.) This wasn't important.
7.) This situation was another that wasn't fully explained, but my most obvious guess is that Matt abused him when he was younger, just as he abused all of his children.
8.) They were caught. Most of them. At the time it happened, her father had already passed, so he wasn't there to "teach them a lesson" so Al and a few of her father's friends took his place and set them straight. They never caught Sarge, though, and I can't say I know why. This is why she broke a bottle and stabbed Sarge back at the bar and completely lost her temper.
9.) She didn't think of it. From what I've seen, she tends to run away from her problems and always avoids them.
10.) Al's a lazy douche.
11.) She doesn't think. She's not their teacher. But she knows they're all capable of doing it themselves.
12.) It's quiet out there. She doesn't think. Perfect!
13.) Most likely, yes. He's just another sick man.
14.) This one, I'm really not sure about. Robin shot him, I know that much, but he tried to get back into the house just as Robin closed the door on him and called the police. Then she discovered the other girls undressed and drugged. I don't know, really.
15.) I'm pretty sure he did. He gives off a sort of uncaring vibe, so I wouldn't be surprised if I found out that he did.
16.) I don't know. Ask him.
17.) Oh, he's the one who told Robin about the other similar cases. The whole point of that was to show how much Al didn't care and how he never really tried at all to solve cases. Basically, he was giving her advice and telling her not to trust him entirely.
18.) I'm guessing it was Matt.
19.) I never really thought of that. I doubt it, though, because if Johnno isn't the son of Matt, then oh, God, that's a miracle. I don't see why Al would do such a thing.
20.) Such beauty isn't to be taken for granted. I'd love to visit one day. I'll be sure to tell you if it really is that beautiful once I finally visit. Lol

reply

1. Probably someone from the pedophile ring that operated in the cop's basement.
2. Maybe he was Robin's father. Judging from her mother's fear of Robin getting together with her "brother", that would make sense.
3. Doesn't matter. What matters is hat her character is unable to form lasting relationships.
4. He preferred to sleep with them and beat them.
5. Where else would she go to escape a mass-murderer and a child-sex ring?
6. If we knew where, then she wouldn't have vanished.
7. Johnno's father had issues with everybody.
8. Sarge was the only one left by the time Robin had the courage to tell anyone. He was run out of town by Johnno.
9. You've obviously never been raped.
10. Stabbing a resident in a jurisdiction you are sworn to serve and protect as a police officer is grounds for sacking.
11. Solving everybody's problems is not a teacher's job.
12. Anywhere except the camp is generally considered leaving.
13. child sex trafficking
14. Who cares?
15. I doubt it.
16. She was too drunk to drive.
17. It's a police show with murders. Pathologists are standard characters.
18. This happened just after Matt was told that Zanic was a registered sex offender.
19. That's a reasonable conclusion.
20. Are you really that stupid?
