Hands down, the best television I've ever seen

Stunning in every way; acting, writing, subtlety, suspense. Simply phenomenal.

I agree it was one of the best.

Hands down, this must be the first television you have ever seen.

It wasn't horrible. It certainly wasn't good. It was as if a bunch of Brits got their hands on a copy of "The Killing," and decided to plagiarize it, but make it less interesting. They figured if it was filmed in a beautiful place, no one would notice.

Meh. It's a 6/10 at best.

Eh, it's a bit too drawn out for my liking. There's not quite enough story to last 6 hours, so there's barely any narrative momentum. It's often almost terminally static.

What saves it from absolute tedium is the stunningly shot scenery, which kinda made me want to pack my bags and go live in Queenstown on a whim. New Zealand really is a gorgeous country outside its somewhat humdrum main cities.

The series also gets by on its wonderfully eerie atmosphere, which constantly suggests more intriguing mysteries than the plot ever provides.

OP I watched this show thanks to seeing your subject posted when I glanced at the boards. Holy crap this was one of the most awesome shows I have ever seen, actually it wasn't a tv show, it was art something more akin to going to the theater.

I had just been trying to watch true detective and I couldn't take more than three episodes. Then I watched this and thought ok this is what they were really trying to capture. Something extremely deep, meaningful, touching and dark.

While I agree that ToTL was great (and not misandrist), True Detective was great, too. Different themes. (TD focused on the partnership of the two main characters tied together by generational, cultish abuse of children. ToTL focused on sexual abuse, and also redemption/repair/understanding of one's past.)

I love Campion's work. People who say she portrays all men in a bad light aren't paying attention.

Ignore everyone in the thread who disagrees with you. Top of the lake was beautiful, rich, understated and honest. These cretins who compare it to Breaking Bad are what's wrong with TV viewers these days. Nobody appreciates subtlety and gentleness, everyone needs anger, violence and titillation to be "entertained". These people want to just sit back and have extreme after extreme thrown at them, rather than view something that is genuinely affecting, challenging and beautiful.

thanks, joomington. I couldn't agree more.

ech, I love NZ and it's landscapes, and strong women, plus an atmosphere of the show, so it'll do for me. I'm hooked. Love this show already.

OH, and c'mon it has Zena and Tegan and Lucy Lawless...you know where I'm going with this, right? Precious childhood memories ;) ;D No, seriously I like the show.
