Hands down, the best television I've ever seen

Stunning in every way; acting, writing, subtlety, suspense. Simply phenomenal.

Hate to come off like a wine snob here, but you clearly just tried something mediocre for the very first time after only having drank wine in a box.

The analogy being that this is a mediocre show, with thin writing, PREDICTABLE (which is unforgivable considering the subject matter) and poor plot.

I have to assume that you haven't watched Breaking Bad or other shows of it's ilk.

reply

It was, one or two striking images aside, utterly conventional at heart.
Precisely. It's a few steps up from most television, but certainly a few steps down from greatness. Just a pretty average, if gorgeously shot, procedural with pretensions of being Art.

I have two words for the OP: Breaking Bad.

reply

Amen

reply

Not even close... The OP has got it right.

reply

Meh.

reply

I tried so hard to like this thing. It had so many cool parts to it. But it was just too odd....too New Zealand odd.

reply

You're joking, right? I have just finished watching this, and whilst there were some excellent performances (Peter Mullen for example), I simply cannot understand ANY of the comments you've made. The writing was incredibly thin. Entire episodes would go by with no advancement of the story, except to go down paths that turned out to be of little/no interest of value. And it all wrapped up in the last 20 minutes with a hailstorms of twists that made the previous 6 hours of drab nonsense seem like it was a different show. What is the suspense to which you refer? the search for Tui (could have been suspenseful) was almost a sideline - Moss's character did almost NONE. She tried to convince us that she was upset about the girls disappearance, but given the chance to look, she just beds down with matey and has a romp. In fact, that's pretty much her main activity in the show. And what the hell was that hippy commune about? Cut out all the scenes with that in, and you lose zero from the story. Apart from some pretentious utterings from Ms. Hunter, that sounded like the scrawlings of a depressed teenager.

Pretentious, vapid, dull.

reply

In complete agreement.

I enjoyed Moss's performance for the most part, but this show was terribly boring and odd. I hated the editing and found most, if not all, the characters to be unsympathetic and lacklustre.

reply

Yet your icon is from one of Campion's films....odd you should stiff Campion on this one.

I'll tell you in another life when we are both cats.

reply

The only reason I watched Top of the Lake (and was extremely eager for it) was because if how much I love Bright Star. Her work her usually beautiful yet with a hint of realistic tragedy.

That's why my disappointment for TOTL is so high. 12 episode of Jane Campion? I was on board.
But agh, after the pilot, it was hard to drugs through this abysmal mess. It was inconsistent, the characters were just so unlikeable and it was hard to understand what Campion was going for.

reply

It is unfortunate that you didn't realize before watching Top of the Lake that it was going to be a total different experience than Bright Star was.
I think Top of the Lake is beautiful as well as tragic - you just don't have the great love story that Bright Star had - but of course it's like comparing apples and oranges!

I'll tell you in another life when we are both cats.

reply

I didn't expect it to be the same as Bright Star. I expected similar quality. There's a difference. I'm not a huge fan of The Piano, but I still think it's of similar caliber to Bright Star. The darkness of it just didn't appeal to me, but that's purely subjective.

However, TotL was just a mess, plain and simple. You might have liked it, but I didn't.

A rose is just a rose.

reply

The Piano was a masterpiece. Bright Star was an excellent film.
Sorry you didn't like Top of the Lake. The Piano will always be my favorite Campion film though.

Do you have anything to contribute to this conversation or are you going to continue just poking and jabbing? As far as the film not being up to par, of course, that is your opinion. I'm sure some agree and others do not; however, if this mini-series was so bad, why did they ask Campion to do another? lol

@nickwarren1963: spot on, couldn't have summed it up better myself.

clearly, your opinion is wrong and you do not know what you are talking about, I would suggest going back to school and learn how to write.

reply

I think I watched a different show, it was bad.

Its that man again!!

reply

Perhaps you were looking for the boards for another series or film?

The only thing "stunning" about this was that it got made at all. I was stunned that it was greenlit, made, and released.

Yet how odd it was nominated for around 8 Emmy's...hmmm makes me wonder if you know anything about the filmmaking at all...this is besides the fact that it was critically acclaimed. Hate to see what you think is good filmmaking since you had it staring at you in the face and didn't recognize it.

I'll tell you in another life when we are both cats.

reply

Getting nominations means nothing. The Big Bang Theory, year afte year, gets nominated yet completely lacks quality.
Tatiana Maslany, one of the most deserving nominees this year, got the shaft yet Connie Britton was selected for her mediocre/soap level work in Nashville?

reply

...you needn't wonder - I know quite well what good film making entails, and other than beautiful cinematography, this ain't it.

And please don't think Emmy nominations are any kind of endorsement of quality. They're not.

I'd agree with you if you were right.
As if your opinion counts more than Emmy nominations.

That's okay - I treat personal attacks on message boards like I do the Westboro Baptist "Church" - I ignore them.

You've obviously got an axe to grind, given your response to my and others' posts - so have at it.

Lol what a lie. You've not ignored anything. If you had ignored anything I said, you wouldn't be responding.

reply

Well, if you like misandrist garbage, I'm sure Top of the Lake is the best there is on television.

Those with a more refined taste tend to stay away from it though.

reply

Take your MRA crap and shove it. There's nothing 'refined' about your taste apparently.

I'll tell you in another life when we are both cats.

reply

You have taste. I cannot say the same about some of the others on here.
