Plot holes pissed me off

1. why didn't he look for other machines with better batteries and switch them out.
2. Instead of wasting time talking to a baby maybe look for solutions to your problems.

I know its a movie and its for dramatic effect but BAH!

Plot holes like that always make me angry.

What irritated me was that he cranks for a few seconds and gets 3 minutes of power. That's at least a 75 watt bulb in the incubator, probably more like 100 or 150. "A healthy well-fed laborer over the course of an 8-hour day can sustain an average output of about 75 watts" per Wikipedia. Anyone who's ever ridden a bicycle with a generator would believe that's probably right...

reply

As the character says in the movie, the machine/battery was malfunctioning. It wasn't holding a charge at all. He would crank as much energy as it would use and then it would only last 3 minutes (and gets lower as the movie progresses). That's another part of the the plot - he is challenged by the time limit.

reply

Missing the point--there's no way he'd get 30 seconds out of it from that cranking, never mind three minutes. Even if everything was working perfectly.

reply

Apples and oranges. it's not a generator, it's a battery charger.

reply

Yes. So it's even less efficient than feeding the power directly to the machinery. There are huge losses involved and current technology doesn't allow anything remotely as efficient as what was shown in the movie.
What was your point?

I'm sure you already know this, but MOST "professional" people are forbidden from being involved in the emergency care of their loved ones. It takes knowledge, speed and a bit of detachment to effectively address life-threatening situations.

Therefore, it is easy to ascertain that a distraught father/grieving widower may not be in the "best" emotional state to handle a life-threatening situation on top of a major environmental crisis. Most people would be hard-pressed to handle one given the circumstances.

Yeah... it is a drama.. but.... I was wondering why in hell he didn't pull the battery from the ambulance... or the boxes on the fire escape lights or the defibrillator machines which would have at least a couple in the ambulance or on the floors...which he could hook up in place of the failing battery on the machine.. perhaps it would not be the right voltage but it could work... I'm sure the ambulance batteries would be closer if the hand crank worked on the machine plus the ambulance unless looted would have at least some supplies even if he only had a minute or so at a time.

Then while the ventilator is not really mobile, I'm sure he could get a couple of the gurneys and move the ventilator on it and roll the thing with crank generator (or put the crank generator on another gurney) and move it...

Sure it wouldn't get off the floor, but it would make it easier to scavenge for stuff...

Also.. why didn't he check other floors for the IV solution... it could have been on more than just one floor.

Why when the CB was working for him did he not try other channels?

and lastly... don't most hospitals.. or buildings with power back up generators usually have the generators on the roof?
