Because they wouldn't have had a movie if he did the obvious. I gave them the benefit of doubt and thought, "Okay, they took all the other pumps from every floor, during the evacuation." However doubtful.
Too bad they didn't tell the character that the pump wasn't necessary, and it's only a nursing convenience. An IV can be administered by slow drip, directly, and oxygen in the unit could've been administered manually. He couldn't figure that out, and nobody thought to tell him. A pity.
The dog not only saved the character, but the movie itself. Most of the movie was predictable. Walker gave a great performance though, especially with the script he had to work with.
