Steve didn't grow up on a farm. His dad worked at the Caterpillar plant in town. His grandfather was the farmer, he visited there sometimes.

I didn't grow up on a farm but I did grow up in a small town (less than 10,000 people) in Western Iowa and I've never learned how to drive stick. That part of the movie cracked me up, found it completely relatable.

Well,. . yes, but we are missing the point here. His inability to drive the stick shift was not just comic relief. It was symbolic of the fact that he and his partner were trying to pass as local or at least rural, and that he even kind of believed his own schtick.
