I totally binge watched this show on Netflix. I was absolutely raving about it but now, after I have calmed down (hehe) I can see some shortcomings. At the end of the day, they are relatively minor as there are so many strengths I am prepared to overlook them. Overall, it's amazingly smart, funny and just so so good.
Having said that, there are some elements of 'disbelief' in White Christmas which I couldn't quite suspend.
The first minor thing was that with all the technology, wouldn't the little girl have 100 other options, other than walking out into the snow, to get help? I mean we are already so precious with children, I find it unbelievable that there wouldn't be some kind of emergency thing built in to kids so even the youngest babies could get help if they needed it.
But the big one for me was the blocking thing. It just didn't seem believable to me that this would be legal, let alone something people would use. I mean it's not even in the 'Blocker's' best interest given what we see when Beth blocks Joe initially. I would find a grey blob coming at me menacingly a lot more scarier! Maybe Brooker is making a comment on our disengagement with each other. Will we all regress so much (in terms of emotional intelligence) that we'll just block out anything/anyone we can't deal with? The world would go absolutely mental! So I guess, yes, now that I think of it...maybe it was a point being made. That it will be normal to be sadistic and cruel and those who are empathetic and feel real feelings are punished?
So maybe I have talked myself around and thinking of this episode a bit differently. It was certainly unsettling, that's for sure!
