Wouldn't Charles Deetz be stuck in the house?
If he died he would be stuck in the house as a ghost for something like 180 years. So we should expect him to be in the film and with a substantial role if that is the logic of the original film.

I dont remember the cartoon much and where it fell with its logic.
Alec Baldwin and Gina Davis could be written off as having moved on to the next stage of the afterlife, maybe they found a loop hole to expedite the process in the handbook.
The cartoon was basically Beetlejuice and Lydia as BFFs hanging out in the Neither World.
There was no parents nor Maitlands in the cartoon.
