See the movie THE EMERALD FOREST and you will see why people don't like dams.
shareIt kills the fish. This is stated in the movie.
shareGo watch the movie first, then comment. I don't know why people comment without seeing the film. I usually comment after seeing the film, so I can voice my opinion.
Always look for the positive in every situation.
Wow, some forums in Wikipedia are intelligent sounding-boards for scintillating discussion, others are bathroom walls -- kind of where this one is heading. Interesting that the few self-described "environmentalists" on this thread are the most reasonable people here.
First off, the title of this question, if applied to any other group, would be considered an unjust slur (but then if you are quoting the racist Howard Bloom, why not?) Do all Italians break legs for money? All Jews are cheap? All women hate The 3 Stooges? (Well maybe this last one is true.)
At least use the term "radical Environmentalist".
Why would you assume that 3 people in a fictional film represent a group? Anyway, we are all environmentalists, in that we rely on the natural world for a host of valuable services: from providing clean water to breaking down our wastes. Now my kids and I are what some on here would call "environmentalists" and we are engineers. Hence, we know stuff. For example, we know that your beloved capitalism is not pricing aforementioned services properly or even at all. This make for a dishonest accounting where the touted prosperity is not properly offset by degradation loss, adverse health effects or services denied to future generations.
It also makes for waste. Like tenants whose landlord pays for heat.
We have no gripe with honest free-enterprise: one that pays its way and does not use the atmosphere as a free CO2 sink.
Back to the film. I saw it because I find author Edward Abbey intriguing. And certainly the themes of the movie are much broader that a dam, environmentalism or crime in general. These themes are explored best in the discussion at the commune immediately following the sabotage. Here, gentle reader, you will find the various viewpoints of "environmentalists" expressed, including the nuclear option, the salmon, reduced use and many other ideas. I suggest you re-watch that scene. Oh, but then you could not forge mindless generalizations about people who make you feel threatened.

Simple: because dams kill salmon.
shareThe facts are freely available for anyone to find simply by googling 'why are dams bad for the environment' instead of asking here on a board like this just so all you redneck Trumpers can have a treehugger-bashing, masterbation-off.
It's so sad that instead of being the liberator of the truth, available to all, the internet has simply become the great leveler that encourages the ignorant right to speak as freely and authoritatively, as the experienced and the expert. In fact in countries that are deeply anti-intellectual, such as the US and the UK the ignorant right are now more free to speak as if they know what they are talking about than the informed.
'Well I've got two words for you - STFU'
You are correct. It never ceases to amaze me how many people buy a computer, the closest thing to having all the world's facts and knowledge in your home, but never really use it to inform themselves.
