It was boring. Why no one* admits that?

Don't get me wrong, I love the Coens. I've seen almost all of their movies and I like most of them. Even the less good ones are still 6/10 in my book. But I don't understand why this one is praised so much. High user rating and extremely high critics rating. I'd give it a 5/10.

Of course it's not bad in any sense. Coens can't do a honestly bad movie. The dialogues, the characters are O.K., good acting, nicely filmed etc., etc., I just don't know what to enjoy in this one. Little of Coen's black humour, little of funny situations, no tension, and the story is uninteresting.

"Why no one admits that?" --> this question wasn't meant for everybody. I'm sure half of the praisers are actually enjoyed it for whatever reason, but I'm also sure there's another half who didn't and acts like they did because it's the Coens and they look smarter enjoying an "art" movie.

*EDIT 2015.12.26.: English is not my first language. Incorrect word "noone" was fixed. It confused some people who didn't understand the point, and kept pointing it out for almost two years.

HIPSTERS
Speaking of which, isn't 2013 a tad late for making a movie about the whole folk fad? Folk is out, this movie is boring. Coens have a couple great flicks, the rest is mediocre and overrated.

I'll admit it. I just LOVE the Coen brothers, but to me this was their worst movie. It was BORING! I was so disappointed.

It's a very enjoyable film. It's realistic and entertaining with superb cinematography, visual style and humour that convey its uniqueness. Deserves more than one viewing.

I liked it. But then, it appealed to me cos I'm interested in that particular period of Americana music. Also, as a guitar player meself, I liked the way that the camera lingered on the fretboard to show that those were real chords and runs that the performers were playing

the tunes played in the film were also captivating. And Carey Mulligan stole the show for me, especially watching her up on stage singing as part of a trio.

Had I not been interested in that particular musical period or in guitar styles, then yes, I would've struggled to stay with it. But in reality, I liked it

Hang me and 100 Miles Away from Home are the songs I liked the most.

I'm surprised at the hatred for The Hudsucker Proxy. I love that movie and thinks it's hilarious. Oh well. As the scotsman said, "If we all liked the same thing, what an oatmeal shortage there'd be!"

If I were ranking the Coens, it would turn almost upside down from your list.

I HATED Barton Fink, for one thing.

Let's see:

The Big Lebowski 10/10
Miller's Crossing 10/10
The Hudsucker Proxy 10/10
Raising Arizona 9/10
O Brother, Where Art Thou? 9/10
Fargo 9/10
Inside Llewyn Davis 9/10
Blood Simple 8/10
No Country for Old Men 7/10
True Grit 6/10
The Ladykillers 5/10
Burn After Reading 5/10
A Serious Man 4/10
Barton Fink 3/10

We agree on Fargo and O Brother, and are on roughly the same page with Blood Simple and True Grit. And of course we both disliked The Ladykillers. What about it? Any Ladykillers defenders out there?

reply

Okay. I forgot The Man Who Wasn't There and Intolerable Cruelty. Both 5/10, I guess. In the same rank as The Ladykillers and Burn After Reading. Not terrible (that would be Barton Fink), but not memorable either. I have no wish to see either again. No Country for Old Men is probably better than I ranked it, but the ranking is intended to reflect my personal enjoyment, not an attempt at objective value. While I'm somewhat knowledgeable, I would not attempt to step outside my own taste.

My favorite Coen Brothers movies are Citizen Kane, The Godfather and Casablanca.

I see what you did there. Clever.

While i'm not a fan of the Coens most recent movies ( dont care for ASM and BAR, TG was mediocre ) i thought this movie was fantastic. Maybe it's because i'm huge folk music fan or something but i thought everything about this movie was top-notch. Definitely in my top 5 of 2013.

I did not enjoy it because I didn't like any of the characters.

I found it amazing, the Coen's best work since BIG LEBOW. Their offbeat timing is right back on track. Love it.

i freely admit it. When the film opened with LD singing an entire folk song, I said to myself, Oh no. Please no. Don't let this be another A Serious Man.

I knew I was in for it, but I stayed through the end. Even watched the featurette to gain perspective on it, which was also dreary. To think i was looking forward to seeing this after hearing Oscar Isaac discussing it on NPR's Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me.... This was nothing like the film that was described.

So now the Coen's are officially hit-or-miss to me, with unfortunately more "miss".
