I videotaped his trial for local TV news
Ironically, I lived close to Bob's bakery, and bought donuts from him most mornings for about a year. He didn't say much at first, but I have a way of getting people to chat with me, at least a little. I was the lead videographer & editor for the CBS affiliate, KTVA. Imagine my horror when the story came out, wondering how many mornings were the morning after... I was assigned to the story, but he had cover over his head after his arrest, when transported from jail to court and back initially, so he didn't see me until the trial. TV coverage was very limited back then, but I'll never forget the very first day. I was set up in the front row, just to his right, less than 10 feet away, when he was escorted in and seated. He looked down for a few, then slowly looked up at the judge's bench, then the jury, then finally over to my side. When he saw me, he cracked a hint of a smile, nodded to me, and said quietly, "Lisa". It felt really strange, but I did the same back, nodding a nearly inaudible, "Bob".
