Why is there no real Chernobyl movie?

I'm talking a fiction drama, something like Titanic or Pearl Harbor? I've alway been fascinated by natural disasters, I loved Titanic but I assumed there hadn't been a Chernobyl movie because it was so recent that it would be in bad taste. Still, a action/drama would be in infinitely better taste than this horror porn! The atmosphere and events are begging to be dramatized, I don't get why it hasn't happened yet.

I would certainly watch something based on this event. Just as long as there's no dramatic cheese or DiCaprio.

good question. perhaps it's arguable that its because there's really no way to spin a positive angle on these man-made disasters beyond bravery. in the meantime we'll always have "the china syndrome"

I think they could have done one because 9/11 was a man made disaster and people made movies off of it like "World Trade Center" and "United 93." I don't see there being anything stopping them from making a Chernobyl movie seeing as they made it a few years after it happened. They probably don't have a good story line for it.

There is a section on Chernobyl in 'Life after Humans' (or something like that - planet earth: population zero? - I can't remember).

It's actually quite fascinating how unaffected the place IS. Basically, everything is fine there.

I assumed it was because the gov't didn't want people to know what really happened. I'd watch one if it were made though.

Also, I think there's still an exclusion zone so any footage would have to be from old clips. I read that there's an area of 1000 sq miles around the area, inside that only officials are allowed, probably to take periodic measurements and tests.

There is a recent film called Land of Oblivion (2011)

I have not had a chance to watch it, but I know it's a drama closely connected to the Chernobyl disaster. However, I don't think this is a Titanic-type of film which would show the explosion in the power station and the following panic and evacuation of people.

I liked this movie very much, but I agree that it would be great to see another one based on the actual facts of 1986. I've been seeing a few documentaries on it lately, and the topic is truly fascinating, though it's impossible not to feel bad for the thousands of innocent people who suffered that terrible tragedy. I too think that the fact it happened so recently might have something to do with this (though there's a movie based on 9/11, right?). Too many survivors and relatives will probably feel offended, and they'd certainly be entitled to it.
