I hate to admit this...

but it wasn't THAT HORRIBLE. And know that I will be the first one to rip a movie to shreds. I think what saved me tho is that I went in figuring that it would be bad and the lowest expectation possible; I also didn't expect to be scared. If you go in that way, it's not that bad. I was more fascinated by seeing the location but the storyline...I get it. I am not a fan of the Paranormal Activity movies...I see them and then bitch about how bad they are lol so that's another reason I didn't expect much. Typical movie that tried to scare you with darkness and loud noises , typical blonde big boob girl with her dark haired not so big boobed friend, etc. I will get flamed for this but actually liked it more than The Cabin in the Woods...which probably makes me stupid but I don't care.

And for the record, there were 3 of us in the theatre, although it was the afternoon of a holiday.

reply

Why would you get flamed? I, for one, agree with you that it is definitely not that bad, and don't care if there do happen to be those that are immature enough to come around "flaming" someone for having a different opinion. I also went in thinking it would be incredibly horrible, so that probably helps to not have high expectations to begin with. I've seen much, MUCH worse movies than this. I gave this one a 6/10, not that great of a score, but not as poor as many others seem to think it deserves.

reply

I agree with your 6/10 score. Not a terrible movie but certainly not a terrible movie I think where it faulters is in that it feels similar to too many movies, instead of separating itself from the pack.

reply

That is what I rated it too.

Eh, just that after I saw The Cabin in the Woods, I saw people get flammed and called stupid because they said they didn't like it. (Personally, I could not wait for it to end and almost walked out). Yes, I have seen some HORRIBLE movies but can say that this wasn't one of them.

I think the fact that it's marketed as a scary movie works against it. Maybe I have a high tolerance because I LOVE scary movies but it takes a lot to really scare me. Most of the little jumps were because of loud noises (just like Paranormal Activity).

At first, I thought that maybe Uri was in on it with the officials and were bringing people there for radiation experiments (which would have been a good twist) but found out quickly that wasn't the case!

reply

I would of rated it higher if they had gone a different direction as in if the radiation began making them hallucinate more and more over the period of the film so they we're dealing with something more personal and psychological. Like i said in my previous post i felt it was too similar to other movies

reply

Wow, that's really sad. And I actually really liked The Cabin in the Woods. But insulting people for not liking it? That's pretty childish. I wouldn't take anyone who does this seriously.

It takes a lot for a movie to scare me as well, and of course Chernobyl Diaries didn't scare me. I felt a bit creeped out atmosphere-wise, which was pretty fun and what I actually enjoy much more than any cheap jump scare. But I'm at the point now where I never expect to be scared by any movie that claims to be scary, so I suppose it's easier to not get as disappointed as others.

If that would have been the case, then why pretend to be a tour-guide and take them around? Why not just kidnap people and take them straight to the "hospital"?

reply

I agree with 6/10.

Actually, I'd give the first half a 9. Seriously, I LOVED the premise. It's a great idea, Yuri was a great character, and wherever it was that stood in for Pripyat was creepy and perfect.

Unfortunately, the movie fell apart in the second half as the characters acted unbelievably stupid - I mean, beyond horror-movie stupid. (We're surrounded by and trying to hide from mutant cannibals, so let's be sure to scream and shout loudly and waste lots of time mourning our dead friends and family.) Then, the "twist" turned out to be ridiculously boring and predictable. The second half is at best a 3/10, so I think 6 is a reasonable score.

reply

I had a good time, wasn't expecting much beyond some laughs. I liked when that bear came at them in the apartment building, and I really liked the ending.

reply

I liked the ending too. It's the first movie I have seen in awhile that, when it ended, I didn't say "WTF ?"

reply

That's why I like The Mist too.

reply

Eh, while i'll never rate CHERNOBYL DIARIES ahead of CABIN IN THE WOODS (that
one is really a love letter to 80's style horror fans), i definitely
found CD to be much better then people are giving it credit for, as well.

I like the creepy atmosphere. That's about the best i can hope for, nowadays,
being a grizzled horror vet.

I hold out hope, though. I watched "SUSPIRIA" about a year or so back
for the first time, and was stunned by how frightening that film was.

I CAN still be scared! It just takes a craftsmen of the highest order.

I saw the movie, and liked it.

I thought it would be shown long of the skin peeling.
Are the guards aware of what is happening?

To drew_atreides:

You know, this is off the topic but I agree with you. I watched Suspiria when I was in high school and it terrified me for years. Now that I am a horror fanatic, I must watch it again without closing my eyes. :-)

reply

I actually thought the movie was funny and not necessarily scary. I loved cabin in the woods but i love 80's horror movies. I wished that Chernobyl Diaries had a tad bit more gore or more images of the patients. The movie really reminded me of wrong turn or the hills have eyes.

reply

I think it should have had more time with the tourists having been shown after getting exposed to radiation that alters a person's skin.

to me, it seemed like a combination of the hills have eyes and i am legend. nuclear disaster mutants with a post apocalyptic feel.

Good comparison.... So true!

I'm gonna eat your brains to gain your knowledge!!!

it's a mediocre movie but definitely not terrible.

I agree. I went in there expecting it to be bad and not scary and although I wasnt scared and could mainly tell what was going to happen...it was still a good movie over all.
