Dots circumference; series 2

Is Ashleigh Cummings wearing a padded suit to enlarge Dots size? Maybe to make her appear homely, or to cover up a pregnancy. Just seems to stand out. Are we the only ones to notice. If it is natural I apologize for pointing out the lady's body shape and meant no offense.

reply

I think it is from weight gain. Jane also seems to have
increased in size as well.

reply

I always asumed that its those 20's period costumes which are unflattering to most body shapes.

reply

I try to make the determination based on arms and legs. Jane has shown
her legs, Dot has not. Dot might just have become incredibly busty.

reply

Well, the ideal body shape in the 1920s was short, flat-chested, and rather bottom-heavy, and the clothes certainly do make everyone who wears them look shorter and more heavy-hipped.

Yes, I know that Miss Fisher herself was very slim-hipped, but that wasn't true of every beauty of the day. If someone like Dot gained a few pounds in the fashionable places, she would not be considered less attractive.

i also noticed she was looking a little more buxom that usual. i assume she put on weight

Is Season 2 out in the U.S. yet (PBS currently doesn't have it scheduled) or are you all just making me jealous that you're watching it elsewhere?

reply

My wife asked me if I had the TV in stretched mode. We noticed it and assumed
she might be pregnant. I'm sorry Dot if that's not the case.

reply

We noticed it and assumed she might be pregnant.

I thought the same thing.

Write it down, put it in an envelope, tear it in half, throw it away and shut your face.

reply

MelCooley, you are not the only one being jealous. Series 2 is probably only just going out in Australia, which means we foreigners (I'm Danish) will have to wait a while yet.

I only visited this board to check on the progress of series 2. So I'm happy that it's completed and being aired. But a tad sad that I'll have to wait for Danish TV to get their act together and buy it - or for it to be released on DVD. Ho hum.

Yes, miss MelCooley, all seasons are available on Netflix, for free, no commercials. and in glorious HD

I was in the middle of Season 2, episode 5 when I thought to myself, "Gee Dot, you've gotten fat!" My immediate thought was perhaps Ashleigh Cummings was pregnant and trying to disguise this (as the character she plays is unmarried) so I did a Google search and came up with zip. She is decidedly more plump in season 2 though. It isn't unattractive, just noticeable...I'm glad I'm not the only one who wondered.

reply

I can't find anything that says she is/was/has been pregnant, married, or has any children.

I just thought I hadn't noticed in the earlier episodes, that she's just a dowdy character.

Ideals of beauty aside, there's always someone out there that doesn't fit the mold. The typical fashion plait in the 1920s was built like a teenaged boy: Flat chested, thin, and not bottom-heavy! But flat, flat, flat!

An older woman, who had had her children, and spread some, usually looked like and dressed much like Margaret Dumont (of Marx Brothers movie fame).

Also, remember, sometimes a second-banana type woman is asked not to outshine her star (a la Lucille Ball/Vivian Vance). I don't think they did that, here, but that was what I was thinking.

She's lovely, regardless! (I'd never seen her in anything before this).

reply

i think she may be padded up, as you said to make her appear more homely (as she's described in the books). If you watch puberty blues at all, Ashleigh has a main role in that in which she's regularly running around in a bikini .

reply

With each new episode of Series 2, I kept thinking that Dot has to be made up to be more and more dowdy and ordinary plain looking than she was in Series 1. As cute as Ashleigh is, I cannot imagine that she would allow herself to get to where that was her now natural look. All that being said, kudos to the make-up department!

Even though she only appeared twice in this series, it appears as if they may have done the same with the character of "Jane" as well.

reply

I love this show! My wife and I watched the first series twice and just finished series 2. I would have to agree with DoubleClutcher's comments, about both Dot and Jane. Whenever you catch the briefest glimpse of Dot's ankles and calves, they are so white as if to suggest stockings or padded stockings as part of her "dowdy" appearance. Makeup or wardrobe? IMHO possibly so. I have not read the books but I undersand that is how Dot is described. New to this board but not to IMDB. Apologies if my "first-timer" post unintentionally offends the "old timers" here. :-)

reply

Of course she's wearing stockings! ALL women and girls wore stockings at the time. ONe of the reasons flappers were so scandalous because they would roll their stockings down to right above their knees...or lower! Hence all the references to flappers rouging their knees^.^

One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.

reply

She's definitely not padded that's for sure. Apparently she was (is?) on another show called Puberty Blues and other people noticed she'd gotten fat in that role as well...and there was no reason to pad her character in the other series.

I did some googling before and came up with nothing to support a pregnancy theory except for one or two mentions on social media about a rumored pregnancy. She's a very young actress on dual shows - one about teens - so frankly it wouldn't surprise me if she actually did have a child and it was just sort of covered up. Although personally I think she just put on weight.

I came here just to find out the answer too. I try to avoid the boards of shows I'm watching so that I don't see a spoiler.
I'm watching season 2 now on Netflix and enjoy the show very much.

reply

I noticed that, too. She's gained quite a lot of weight. It's not just padding, since her face is fuller and she has a double chin now that she didn't have before. Her boobs have gotten huge, so maybe she's pregnant.

I just noticed because I was used to her character looking a certain way. And young women like that don't normally put on a lot of weight in a short period of time.

She was not overweight in season 1, even with an unflattering nurse's or maid uniform.

reply

bpollen; Just hope the actress does not become like Melissa McCarthy. On GILMOUR GIRLS she was pleasantly plump, now she is approaching critical mass. Not sure if she is undergoing Fission or Fusion.
