Essie Davis is too old to play Phryne

In the books Phryne is 27-28, while Essie was 42 in 2012, when the series was first broadcast.

Which makes her a bit old to be acting like a flapper, deciding what to do with her life, and lusting after dancers and college boys. And in 1927, it'd make her old enough to be a grandmother, girls married young then.

Actually I think her age makes her more believable, she has more wisdom and has experienced more of life than a 20-something and is very sure of herself--and comfortable with herself as a woman. Plus as an independent woman during that era I would think more people would be trying to control her if she was younger, in my opinion it would be less believable if she was younger.

Nicely said. These were my thoughts as well. I appreciate the fact that she's older because she has lived life and had her good and bad times but still enjoys life and loves adventure.

Essie is gorgeous. Why quibble about age? We should all be so youthful in spirit.

How true. That woman is so off-the-charts sexy, she could be 150 years old for all I care. 😃 Her acting is terrific, too.

No blah, blah, blah!

Have they changed some of the dialogue from the books too? Let's send them to prison!!!!

I don't know what I disagree more with in this opening statement. The fact that because a character is this or that in a book, then an adaptation MUST do the same, leaving no room for creativity of any kind. Or the fact that there's apparently an age-limit on women regarding what they are allowed to do and think or not. Phryne is a free woman, and she can bloody well lust after college boys all she wants, be she 20, 30, 40 or even 80.

Well gosh yeah, pol-edra!

Didn't you know that straying outside the written word of a book series is the film equivalent of "burning the bible"? 

Not too mention the fact that women are only pretty when they are GIRLS! Cause, seriously… once runway models hit 18 it's "OFF WITH THEIR HEADS" and actresses in HollyWHAT are only as valuable as they are young!  So really… who wants anything to do with a deliciously gorgeous, sexy, sophisticated woman with a wealth of fascinating history and experiences when they can have a blank female slate instead? 

Phryne is so clearly a W O M A N, that you'd only be able to do her justice by having a teenager play the part! 

Oh,please---women don't stop having sexual desires or give up their zest for life when they turn 40---that's a bunch of BS and nonsense. Besides, they're at their sexual peak in their 40's---which means some of them are still kicking it with some younger dudes. Only a young person hung up on age would say that. Believe me, life dosen't just all of a sudden stop when you get that age---you live long enough , and you're find that out. If she were a male actor, nobody would even give a damn about her age---let's be real about that. Just sexist thinking, that's all.

I've never read the books, but I like Essie Davis' age. Being 27-28, the character's just too young to have done everything she's done and acquired all the knowledge and skill she has. With an actress in her 40s it's more believable.

Apparently you're not familiar with the acronym MILF. Or the slang "cougar." Essie Davis has a rockin' body and I'm sure many younger men would want to bed Phryne, especially since she is sexually experienced and uninhibited. Of course she still has a sex drive.

Men in their 40s don't hesitate to go after younger women. When I was in my teens (16-17) men in their 40s hit on me. Men in their 70s were hitting on me when I was in my early 30s. Do you complain about that?

Essie is an amazing Phryne and her age means nothing. Quit being so petty.

I completely agree! I adore Phryne just as she is and wouldn't want to see her any younger. I also thought she looked in her 30's but regardless, she brings an air of experience, that demonstrates she lived, and continues to live, a very adventurous life and has a lot of experience on many levels. A 20 something couldn't pull that off.

Nope, I think she's absolutely perfect just the way she is!

Just curious: is the OP - who is named Otter - a man or a follower of the King Otter, Benedict CUmberbatch?

It is hard to tell; however, I wonder when if there are threads on IMDb's male actors' boards whining about the man being too young to start with top women actors who are ten of twenty years old?

Recently I saw a funny film with Paul Rudd and the utterly gorgeous Michelle Pfeiffer. He was 38 pretending to be an actor who was 29 and she was 49 pretending to be a TV writer pretending to be 40. Neither looked or acted the actual ages and the movie was a lot of fun.

The only person who had a problem with the age was Michelle's character, who eventually go over it.

Age is so irrelevant in real life among people possessing working hearts, minds, and souls in their bodies. IMO . .. 
