Season 4

So, season 4. Wasn't there a massive petition to get a third season? Has anyone begun to do this for season 4? I can't believe it wasn't renewed immediately. Just finished season 3 and I refuse to believe that this is the end. It's gaining momentum in America as well, that's got to help, no?? What can we do???

reply

It's not on a commercial channel, it's on the public broadcaster. So I don't know if international sales will help with S4.

Worst. Rescue. EVER!

reply

But maybe if there's more of a public international demand...? What can we do?? There's got to be a petition out there somewhere!

My wife and I emailed the network directly through their website last October. you might want to do the same. We got this reply:

"Dear Don and Christine,

"Thank you for your email.

"I'm delighted to read that you have so enjoyed Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. There has yet to be any word on whether the program will continue to a fourth series, but please be assured that your strong support for the show has been noted for ABC Television management. The program's production team maintains a very active Facebook page, and I would recommend keeping an eye on it for any news regarding more episodes.…"

Thank you so much for the link! I just sent them a message as well, asking about season 4. Maybe if enough of us bug them about it, they'll get the hint! :D

reply

We just sent an email too. Thank you for posting the link. We adore the "Miss Fisher" series and would love to have even an abbreviated 4th season to wrap up some of the inter-personal stories.

reply

I plan to write too.
I must have season 4.

reply

I wish Amazon or Netflix would pick it up if the Australian network doesn't. I live in the US and I found this series by accident and totally fell in love with it. I really really hope it gets another season!

reply

The show is currently on Netflix. That's where I watch it. Go look for it.

I just sent an email asking about season 4 which I hope happens and that it be a longer season than the very short season 3.
Asked for a reply wonder if I will get one.
Updated -- I got nice polite response but I still do know if the show is coming back or not.

reply

I've read that season 4 has been approved and is already in the works!

My understanding is that our beloved Miss Fisher is in the process of taking the WORLD by storm. It would appear that since the cancellation of Downton Abbey all things pertaining to a related period having sets and costumes done with such great care and attention, is drawing yet even more viewers to this wonderful show.
Interviews with producers, cast and crew have indicated that not only do they do all the costumes as they were done in that era but that the costume designer quite literally designed the bags Essie Davis uses around the gun that Phriney carries! The fabrics are all to period and they are cut to fit the cast in quite unique ways because darts had not yet been invented and they want as much authenticity as possible. The reason we see her in pants so often is not just because of the nature of the character herself but also because Essie Davis does all her own stunt work and has learned to drive the cars, fly the planes and do ALL the dancing that "Miss Fisher" is so well known for.

Based on the information I've gathered (SO sorry, no links), I'm fairly confident that MFMM will run at least 5 seasons with the possibility for more depending on how the next few years play out. Typically, the season starts airing in August so I expect that season 4 will start at the end of this coming summer! Which doesn't necessarily mean it will be available everywhere when it does. However I'm sure it's safe to say that we'll all get access in the end.

I for one am not only CRAZY EXCITED but wickedly enticed! Especially given the quite satisfactory nature of the end of season 3! ; - )

So glad to here that Season 4 is on track to happen! I love this show, the characters are rich, the chemistry wonderful and I could go on and on about the costumes! Hurray for us!

reply

If you love the costumes, as I clearly do, you might be interested to know that the costume designer actually sends her designs for the hats to a milliner (hat designer/maker) to be specially made for the show! I want Essie Davis's wardrobe (hats included) SO badly I've been reduced to searching eBay for "miss fisher's clothes" and "miss fisher's hats". eBay has only recently gotten "downton abbey" as a search parameter so I'm not holding out much hope… But I HAVE told my husband I would KILL FOR HER WARDROBE (only bad people who REALLY deserved it of course; but I would kill nonetheless!) ; - )

And I completely agree that the characters are WONDERFUL and the actors have so much chemistry I swear they could set the TV on fire!… Not that I LOVE THIS SHOW far too much to be a normal person though! Well, maybe I love it so much as to be only slightly normal… but I'm confident that Phryney would approve although she might wonder what I'm doing in front of a "wireless with pictures" instead of out living my life and breaking (pardon me, "slightly bending") all the rules in the process!

If you're interested, I also have more info on filming and how they manage to keep that "true to the period" as well!

YES, I'm a wicked-crazy fan! BUT, I'm a fan who reads and I've read every online article I could find (I'm in the US and most of the articles have appeared in the UK and/or Australia). Although I think there might have been one in US "Variety"/Hollywood. So I'll share anything I'm able to! Plus, it's thrilling to know there is someone else out there who pays attention to more than just the stories! Nice to meetcha! ; - )

Totally, totally, and absolutely YES! It was my mother in law who turned me onto this show. She knows I like Sherlock Holmes and Katharine Hepburn and felt that Phryne would be a type of mix for me! I adore everything vintage, especially movies, literature, music, and above all the clothing. Love the apparel.

Miss Fisher does have a wardrobe to die for, to be sure. I can't get over it. She suits the clothes as much as the clothes suit her. She's so stunningly gorgeous, such a lovely creature, it's hard to believe she's even human.

She wears these clothes with such panache....she knows how to walk in them, how to sit, how to move...beautiful poetry in motion.

I want her clothes too!

Hey Merrida, you have GREAT TASTE! (where's a great "fashion" icon when you need one? )

The designer for the show cuts all the clothes out of period fabric and has to drape and hang it onto the actors because the dart hadn't been invented by that period and the dart is one neat little trick that revolutionized clothing! It more or less laid the ground work for ready-to-wear.

In any case… naughty trivia! I saw a picture of Essie on the red carpet (not sure which one) and she's actually quite pear shaped! NO KIDDING!! All I could think was… "Wow, you really ought to have the designer for the show dress you for the carpet… or any other public appearance for that matter!… I know, I know, I'm naughty!

BUT I LOVE THE CLOTHES! I CRAVE THE CLOTHES! I WANT THE CLOTHES IN MY CLOSET!….. NOWNOWNOW!!!

And Essie Davis is PERFECT in all of them! Did you know the designer did Phryne's first purse (the design) around her GUN?! Is that great or what?

I do love the story lines and I do love the casting and I do love the cars, the planes, the houses and the buildings…. OK, I just love the show. Good enough?

But I'm still eyeballing eBay for MFMM clothing and hats cause you just never know! 

Oh yeah, Kate Hepburn's "The Philadelphia Story" is one of my favorite movies EVER! I also have the box collection of all "The Thin Man" movies with Myrna Loy and William Powell! Although I'm also a HUGE Carole Lombard fan too! You want to talk old studio days movies… I'm your gal! 

I have very little current day/modern movies in my collection. I'm a fan of the 30's, 40's (especially) and even 50's and 60's. And yes, okay the decadence of the deco of the 20's.

Love the Thin Man series. Fan of Gene Kelly, Father Knows Best, Errol Flynn, Doris Day, Esther Williams, Barbara Stanwyk, but above all, Kate Hepburn. I've got every book on her and by her, including books just about her fashion, books written by her housemate, several photo albums, I've got most of her movies (of course Philadelphia Story, Bringing up Baby, Pat and Mike). I'm also a fan of Rosalyn Russell.

Most of my movie collection is either vintage movies or series like Phryne's which replicate that time period. (Don't even get me started on The Great Gatsby).

I can't wrap my head around today's movies or tv or series. Mind numbing. No story plot, no real acting. I'm such a fan of Kate that I'm having a painting commissioned of her because yeah, I adore her that much. Not just her clothes but her no BS attitude and strong sense of self.

Rita Hayworth is another one, quite stunning.

But Essie looks amazing in those costumes and I do agree, she would do well to have the same designer do all of her clothes for her. They suit her so well. Like she was born to wear them!

You have a fellow admirer of this silver screen and vintage style specials! :)

HURRAY!!!!!
I'm so thrilled!!! I watch this show for the costumes as well as the mysteries themselves. It's just SO MUCH FUN to watch.

But I don't think it'll air anytime soon. They haven't even started filming it yet. So we may have to wait a while...

reply

Actually, their regular "season" starts in August so if they're not already filming they're gearing up to because as I understand it, they plan on keeping to schedule.

And Yeah… It really is one of my VERY, VERY favorites too! I'm all agog over all things MFMM!

reply

Oh wow, I do hope that is indeed the case!

I'm from the US so before I started watching a lot of overseas tv shows, I was used to a very quick turnover rate and a steady output of 21-22 episodes per season. Then I started to watch UK shows and couldn't believe the comparably longer length of time it took before the subsequent series would air. Not to mention how some shows would tease you with only a "Christmas special" episode and call it a day.

I've gotten so used to having to wait forever that if your predictions are correct and indeed, Miss Fisher will premiere in August, I'd be simply over the moon with joy!!

reply

SO glad to hear it has been renewed. I had already given up hope. THank you so much for the info!

reply

So happy if this is true! MFMM is my FAVORITE! I hope it gets a series 4 and beyond!
Side note, Downtown Abbey wasn't cancelled. Julian Fellows wanted to end the series while fans were still wanting more, instead of happy to see it go.

Unfortunately, it appears if they do continue the show, "Dot" won't be a part of it because of her winning the 2016 Heath Ledger scholarship:

[Ashleigh] Cummings receives a USD$10,000 cash fund; a two year scholarship at the Stella Adler Academy of Acting and Theatre in Los Angeles; two flights (one  to attend the announcement ceremony and the second to transition full-time to the United States), a seven-day trip to the American west coast from Visit California, USD$5,000 worth of visa and immigration services from Raynor and Associates and $500 worth of Uber credit to get around LA.

reply

Grrrrr…..

I've listed Phryne & Dot as my favorite female "bromance" (because why should it ALWAYS be all about the men?) So losing her for 2 years is a real blow. But given that she and Hugh just got married, it would be easy to explain. If she elects to return to Australia at the end of her work at the Adler School, she'd also be easy to write back in. The producer/directors are clearly good at casting because the regulars are wonderful and I REALLY liked the kid they cast to "replace" Hugh when he went off on his "extended fishing trip" because his Mum disowned and then threw him out of the house because he wanted to marry a Catholic!

So although I'm already missing Dot, I still have faith in the show. I'd love to see more of Jane, Phryne's Aunt P is a crack up and now that she and Jack have FINALLY kissed, there's a lot to look forward to. Also, given that she may have won late in the year, the show may have managed to film season 4 BEFORE she left. That alone would give them a lot of time to explain any kind of absence and announce whether it's permanent or not. I'll live in hope until told otherwise because I was REALLY looking forward to her being an "emancipated" wife… much to the consternation of her husband! He was so thrilled with the C. Church's view on Marriage… before Dot got to her Priest that is! 

Thanks so much for the update! You may have noticed that I'm a huge fan of the show . So while I'm not crazy about the news it's still good to have!

Thanks for posting this.

I've been haunting this board hoping for news. This is great news for the actress, and we're still keeping our fingers crossed, fantasizing about a Season 4!

The nice thing about murder mysteries is that you will always have the mystery to sustain your interest. As for the rest? The heroine: A 40-something woman who seems to think she's 22, unbearably smug, hopelessly smitten with her own beauty and charm (must be easily impressed). The setting: The 1920s. Miss Fisher is, I admit, the perfect embodiment of that pathetically self-important, materialistic, hedonistic decade. Was there ever a style more jejune than 'Art Deco'? But I wouldn't mind another season. I've watched everything else from "Midsomer Murders" to "Poirot" to "Rosemary and Thyme" and I need something new to binge-watch. Unlike the others, though, the mystery is the only thing keeping me watching this annoying show.

reply

I do think she's a bit flippant and self-indulgent but this entire show (and the books) is made to be a lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek comedy rather than a serious crime drama. She is more caricature than character but, IMHO, therein lies her charm.

I believe I just read somewhere that they started filming S/4 in June… which would be "winter" in Australia. But it also seems a bit late in their season for me as I know the show usually starts airing on ABC in August.

In any case, I'm still feeling happy and optimistic about 4 and hopeful regarding 5 as well! 

Thank you for the update. I just started watching the show in the US and really like it. The actors/actresses are all wonderful, particularly like Essie Davis, she reminds me so much of Diana Rigg. I just finished watching the circus episode and felt sorry for her when she blamed herself for what happened to Jane. Another great show is Murdoch Mysteries. If you haven't seen it, you might want to give it a try.

reply

Oh freeway,

It breaks my heart to tell you this but you really need to go check out my new thread: "Every Cloud Productions and Season 4". Unfortunately, after checking the production company AND ABC (Australia Broadcast Network) it seems my previous information regarding season 4 and the planning stages for season 5 have all been proven unfounded. For the time being at least, it would appear that all of our hopes have been somewhat dashed.

I still believe there will eventually be a 4th Season but I'll have to keep monitoring my sources to see what they have to add to the subject as time goes by. I refuse to give up hope and still believe there are any number of reasons to hold onto that hope, but you should really go read the thread to see what the latest information is from the sources in the best position to know.

I too have compared Essie to Diana as they are both singularly unique, fascinating women and characters who have given the rest of us something to look to and admire in a TV world that largely limits women from displaying that kind of style, fearless individuality and panache. Until I find out more, I'm afraid we'll just have to be content to watch S/1 - S/3 over and over again because MFMM is about as good and as fun as it gets as far as I'm concerned. So happy viewing my friend!

And I do keep trying The Murdoch Mysteries but they just haven't succeeded in capturing me the way Phryne has.

Thank you Janine-The-Barefoot,

For the latest update. I will keep my fingers crossed for season 4 and yes please keep trying with Murdoch. Sometimes it takes a while to really get into a new series. It took me a while with Murdoch and Miss Fisher to for that matter, now I wouldn't miss an episode.

reply

Okey Dokey freeway!

I'll give Murdoch another look-see! 

I will confess that the use of of real-life people from the era (case in point Michael Faraday who made a WONDERFUL addition to the first episode!) both intrigues and impresses me. I think my real problem is that, unlike many others, I don't find the actor who plays Murdoch as captivating as the show itself might deserve.
"Chemistry" is such an individual thing and in the case of Murdoch, I'm just not captivated by the show's namesake. But I'll give it more time to see if he grows on me like a beautiful piece of architecture or if he leaves me nothing to grab onto like trying to "friction-climb" a flat slab of granite… if you take my meaning! 

I've tried at least 3 times. I just cannot seem to get past the anachronistic mindsets. The setting may be 19th century, but the sensibilities are from the 21st.

reply

Is THAT what it is?!

I've honestly never really been able to nail it down. But I've promised Freeway so by-god I'm going to give it one more shot.  My biggest hurdle, as I've said, is the primary actor himself. He just doesn't really do much for me. But perhaps it's because, as you said, they're not doing a great job of keeping the show "in the period". Either way, I'll shoot for 4 more episodes for a grand total of 5 because if it can't grab me by 5 then it just can't have me at all! 

I will say that it's got more seasons and more episodes than virtually any other show out there so they must be doing something right… unless it's one of those shows that makes itself available to audiences with only a very limited number of choices to begin with… which does still happen as I've recently discovered.

Well, I will say that my sister recommended it to me just a couple weeks ago, after we'd been commiserating over the loss of MFMM. Usually our tastes are similar, but I just don't think I can bring myself to try again.

I just don't like in-your-face social issues, even in Season 3 of MFMM.

reply

Perhaps some would call me insensitive, others a raving maniac… but honestly, I felt like the "in your face social issues" of S/3 were mostly created here on this board. Assuming you're referring to the episode in which she takes over directing a movie for a friend… IMO there was a lot more hysteria related to the episode than I was ever able to see the reason for. I didn't really wade into the thread where all of the activity was going on because, again IMO, some of the comments I read seemed an overreaction to what I observed had actually taken place.

But to each his own opinion and I suppose, mostly, the right to express it in their own way. On the other hand, I've also seen a lot of vitriol spewed out on this board over things (in my case, for example) where a word was misused and an explanation misunderstood. So I suppose I honestly have no business even commenting.

As to Murdoch, I've said I'll give it more time on Freeway's behalf and so I will. I'll have to reserve judgement on that show until I have more information with which to form an opinion.

FYI, here is an interesting article that talks about women's heavy involvement in the early stage of film productions:

http://www.filmdirectorssite.com/women-filmmakers-directors.html

Miss Fisher's involvement in a production that she sponsored financially has some historical context.

reply

THANK YOU SARA!!!

The article was/is fascinating. Naturally, after WWII, Leni R's name became a household world (although good or bad depended on the country you were in at the time) and I had been aware of Ida Lupino's influence for some time. But I find it terribly sad and offensive that the women of the US in particular seem to be caught so often between a rock and the proverbial "hard place". As if, in the US, you simply cannot be a "woman" and BE anything else.

Unfortunately, the controversy on the board wasn't in regard to Phryne working as a director. It was that she had a black male cast member who was whipped onscreen (the film was about ancient Egypt or Phoenicia) and then later took him back to her bed where they ended up involved in some "role playing" wherein he was chained to her bed. I took it that he had a cute face and a hot bod and we ALL know Phryne! Others claimed it was highly racist and that he should never have been the one to be whipped onscreen nor should he have been the one chained to her bed.

Unfortunately, the argument went on for quite some time and got incredibly heated at more than one point. Interestingly enough, NO ONE AT ALL really spent much time commenting on women working as producers and directors in the industry itself. So I would like to thank you for shedding some light on a subject that, because it's about women (once again) seems to be beneath the notice of so many who forget or are unaware of how difficult it is to "break into" any occupation that seems to be markedly male dominated. 
