Why is this rated so relatively low?

I'm not going to go with the stupid "this movie is underrated/overrated" cliché because I know this depends on people's ratings and whatnot but I can't deny I'm quite baffled by its average rating. Honestly, I'd expect this film to have a 7 at least, to me it's a fine example of black comedy but I guess I am pretty much into black comedy. Maybe the widespread hate for Bay (whom I'm not very fond of in general either) had to do something with it?

I gave it a 10/10. For me it was a top 5 of 2013 and easily, EASILY Michael Bay's best film. If you told me Scorsese directed it I wouldn't have doubted you for a second.

You have never seen a Scorsese film if you think that.

reply

Okay I was obviously exaggerating. What I mean is there's clearly so much Scorsese inspiration, especially in the camerawork, rhythm and musical choices.

you are so arrogant and full of yourself, it sickens me

Probably true!

agreed! thought it was really fun!

This is one of the better movies I have seen and I'm not a fan of nonsense ( you can look up my ratings history) Its a weird outlandish crazy comedy and its rated so low because it was based on a true story.

I wish it wasnt because as a stand-alone it is excellent for its genre and it accomplishes its goal quite beautifully. Making such grotesque despicable acts and characters funny is not easy and it was perfectly done here... just perfect. The color composition is excellent, the pacing is fast but not rushed, and the movies keeps you interested and riveted till the end. Never a dull moment

Just go in with an open mind and enjoy the ride......... again its not for everybody and especially if you associate it with the true life events then I would recommend not even watching it. Its a sad story, very sad story of some terrible acts committed by some very deranged individuals and I do feel very sorry for the victims of that horrific crime.

I watched the movie before I read the story and wasn't expecting anything special but this movie is quite entertaining.

Reminds me of the movie "Thursday" with Aaron Eckhart... I'm not actually sure why, but I think if you liked the movie Thursday, you'll enjoy this as well... well, unless you've read the true story in which case you might be disgusted by the movie.

Unfair rating IMO... might become a cult classic in a decade+ ... it certainly has the potential to.

PS. I detest michael "explosions_galore" Bay. just putting that out there.

I just watched Pain & Gain on TV here in Seoul, Korea and perhaps it's the distance from the U.S. that allows this brilliantly written, acted and filmed tragicomedy to underscore even more the unfortunate mindset of American get-rich-quick-at-any-cost idealogy. The absurdity of Daniel, Paul and Anthony's "plan" is made more so because it's filmed as a comedy and not a drama. That brought the sadness of those real-life deaths home to me and gave me a heads-up about events I didn't know had taken place prior to watching the film.

It's about what I expected honestly. Personally, I mostly enjoyed the movie, but didn't quite love it.

Because Rebel Wilson is in it. Having her a true crime movie is a bit like having Carrot top show up in a holocaust picture.

Surprised it's rated so low. It's a solid 7 but I gave it a 10 to help balance it out.

reply

Don't do that.

On the topic.. I've seen it before, didn't like it, revisiting it now. So will rate it later when I've seen it all.

The movie reminds me of Wolf of Wall Street. Two movies about disgusting people with pure reptilian mind brainsets. That is what I strongly dislike: The heat, the drugs, the money, the muscle, the vapidness, the fakery. Somethings, when put aside, may be good (sure, money is great, in it's real context. So to speak), but combined it makes us sick.
It's the equivalent of overindulging on liquor, whipped cream and pizza. You just feel awful about it.

But that's USA for you - Bigger, Better, Stronger. But there is a big dark side to all the glory, of course. That is why it is so hard to stomach. The True Story bit didn't bother me.
